San Francisco 49ers 2018 NFL Draft tracker and player highlights. How will John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan follow up their rookie seasons?

The San Francisco 49ers may be picking in the top 10 of the 2018 NFL Draft, but their fan base is expecting a worst-to-first finish in 2018.

Rightfully so.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan got off to a tremendous start as GM and head coach putting together some nice pieces in last year’s draft and through free agency, but obviously the 49ers were missing a franchise quarterback.

Because of Shanahan’s ties to the Redskins organization, it was widely expected that he and Kirk Cousins would reunite in San Francisco when Cousins inevitably hit free agency.

The 2017 trade deadline changed everything.

The 49ers were well on their way to the second worst record in the NFL, when Lynch came together on a humongous trade with the New England Patriots, sending a mere second round pick to Bill Belichick for backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo and the Patriots apparently couldn’t come together on a long term agreement, and Garoppolo understandably wanted to play. He would have become a free agent this past offseason, but the Patriots didn’t wait around for that to happen.

The 49ers won all five games Garoppolo ended up playing for them, generating big time hype for this season. They rewarded Garoppolo for their team’s newfound optimism with a massive five year, $137 million contract.

The move to acquire Garoppolo was — as I overheard Lynch put it to Brian Daboll at the Senior Bowl — fortuitous.

How will the 49ers follow up that move? Not everything has been rosy in San Francisco this offseason, but this team could turn things around quickly.
