2020 NFL Draft: New York Giants late-round sleeper targets
By Andrew Kim
IOL- Jake Hanson, Oregon
Pressure up the middle can mess up even the most experienced quarterbacks. Spencer Pulley starting at the center spot is not something to look forward so they need a capable starter in the middle of the offensive line. However, if they decide to look later in the draft for one, Jake Hanson is an experienced starter that may be available around the fifth or sixth round.
The Oregon center dealt with an injury last year and missed a game or two but after his redshirt freshman year, Hanson was the permanent starter after taking over. The redshirt senior is 6-foot-4, 303 pounds and is not the biggest interior offensive lineman. However, he is relatively clean in his blocking technique and is a potential rookie backup that can turn into a starter after some development.
OT- Colton McKivitz, West Virginia
Offensive tackle is the biggest need for the New York Giants. However, if they want to address both the left and right tackle positions, they could take a developmental prospect for depth later in the draft. Nate Solder, at age 32, is not getting any younger and he could be gone after the draft. The only competition and depth they have at tackle are Nick Gates, Eric Smith, and Chad Slade. Fleming is more of a swing tackle or backup at best. George Asafo-Adjei, the seventh round tackle the Giants drafted last year, was cut during the season.
Regardless, they need depth and Colton McKivitz has started at left and right tackle for West Virginia when he was a redshirt freshman. The 6-foot-6, 306-pound redshirt senior can play either side and despite his shorter arms, McKivitz has a nasty demeanor that any locker room would want. He could be selected around early day three as the Giants should double up on offensive tackle in the draft.
