Who Stands Out At WR?

It’s always a great time when the pass-catchers take the field in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, and often when we’re on sub-4.30 watch.

There are a couple players on the watch list. Tennessee’s Jalin Hyatt is one of them. Threatening 4.3 could officially vault him into the first round, especially with high production in the SEC. There’s still things to work out with his profile on film, but a speed merchant is important in a WR room in today’s NFL. Tyler Scott was picked in the USFL draft, but his NFL prospects are still very much in play. His reported 40 times have hovered around 4.3 as well, and that’s important for smaller guys.

Quentin Johnston could be dominant in the explosion drills, having a reported 42-inch vertical in two already, according to Feldman. His 40 will be more interesting, as a time in the 4.4s is solid enough to potentially push himself to the consensus WR1 off the board (not rankings) in the 2023 NFL Draft.

It’s an important week for Jaxon Smith-Njigba, as many await the 40 for him. I don’t think many expected the Garrett Wilson time last year, so Smith-Njigba could be in the training room ready to put out a good time. Let’s roll with a time around 4.52 for him as a prediction.

Zay Flowers might not blaze in the 40, but his change-of-direction skills and impressive leaping ability could lead an impressive combine. Tank Dell needs a good week at his size.

As for off the radar, Princeton WR Andrei Iosivas turned heads at the Senior Bowl with his speed. Now, he can make a significant 2023 NFL Draft jump with a strong 40 and vert/broad numbers. Watch for his rise.

Jordan Addison’s 40 will be interesting, as will his measurables (he’s probably not 6’0″). Kayshon Boutte’s acceleration is next level, so his numbers could be impressive. Rashee Rice and Rakim Jarrett could be two big winners as well.

As For The TEs?

Athleticism is very important for tight ends in the NFL. It isn’t the end-all-be-all, but the probabilities lean towards better athletes translating.

You might think Luke Musgrave is the opener here, and technically he is with a first mention. His GPS numbers in Mobile were insane, and sub-4.60 is probably happening.

But, Zack Kuntz from Old Dominion is the dude here. Another guy who could touch the 4.5s, he should also put up impressive explosion numbers. Could day two in the 2023 NFL Draft be in the cards after this? Perhaps!

Darnell Washington has clocked 11.34 in the 100m. It was in high school, but still. Washington looks impressive on film for a 6’7″, 270-plus pound tight end, but his explosion/agility numbers will be interesting. He might need the 40 in terms of posting a strong athleticism score.
