2021 NFL Draft: Round 1, 2nd overall

The Jets have several options when it comes to the second overall pick. Some of these options include taking a quarterback with this pick, addressing another need such as cornerback, or even trading down and picking up extra picks in the 2021 NFL Draft.

When it is all said and done, I think New York will end up taking a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. One of the reasons I think they move on from Sam Darnold is because they have to decide to pick up his fifth-year option this offseason. If they decide to exercise this option, they will owe him a significantly higher salary for the 2022 season, which is likely not the best option for a player who has underperformed so far.

I also think they will add a quarterback with this pick since they have already started the rebuilding process by bringing in a new head coach in Robert Saleh. Why would Saleh want to waste a year with Darnold, when he can spend the year developing a rookie quarterback?

The question then becomes what quarterback do the Jets take with the second overall pick. The two main options are BYU’s Zach Wilson and Ohio State’s Justin Fields. I think the right choice with this pick would be Wilson as he shows both a higher football IQ and a stronger arm. I also think his personality would be the perfect fit in New York.
