2021 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears trade up for QB in two-round mock draft
Here we have the third NFC East team in the top eight picks. But surprisingly, the Washington Football Team is the first of the three to select a quarterback here atop the 2021 NFL Draft. Trey Lance is the last of the top quarterback prospects remaining, so he finds a home in Washington.
Stop me if you’ve heard this before… this guy is an outstanding athlete and a great running quarterback. Lance really was almost a run-first quarterback at North Dakota State and excels in designed runs.
Like many of the other guys atop the 2021 NFL Draft at the position, Lance has the ability to make any throw when off schedule. He utilizes his athleticism very often and very well, evading pressure and making plays down the field.
Lance has an absolute cannon with the ability to launch it deep down the field or to the sideline in a flash. He has shown flashes of impressive touch on deep balls but needs to be more consistently accurate on mid-range passes.
Lance only played one game this 2020 season, and it was a little shaky. You have to take rust into account, but Lance missed quite a few throws and made some poor decisions in his one showcase game.
Lance may have the most upside of any quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft, but definitely needs some time to develop. Landing in Washington with the resurging Alex Smith could be a great destination for Lance.
With Smith playing well, Lance could sit and learn for a year or two, similar to Mahomes, and could then come in and hopefully make a big impact on his team. Washington also swung and missed on their most recent attempt at drafting a franchise quarterback, so they will need to hit on this one.
With a very strong defense and an offense that is coming around, Trey Lance could complete the “rebuild” in Washington and turn them into a dangerous team in the somewhat near future.
