2020 NFL Draft: 5 offensive rookies to watch in second half of the season
By Kyle Edmond
Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Miami Dolphins
While other quarterbacks that went in the first round took the reigns early the season, that wasn’t the case for Tua Tagovailoa. Both Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert went under center in the first couple weeks of the 2020 season, but Tagovailoa had to wait for his opportunity. Now that it has arrived, he is looking to take the NFL by storm in the final weeks of the season.
It’s not often that a team with a winning record makes a change at quarterback, but that’s exactly what the Miami Dolphins did by handing the ball to the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In Tagovailoa’s three starts, the Dolphins are 3-0 and now stand at 6-3 and in the playoff picture.
Having thrown five touchdowns and no interceptions, Tagovailoa’s arm has been on full display while also totaling 519 yards with a 63.6 completion percentage. The reality, though, is that we’ve only scratched the surface of what he can do.
Originally expected to be the top pick of the draft before the emergence of Joe Burrow and an unfortunate injury, Tagovailoa is still in the adjusting period to the NFL. Once the game becomes slower, which it will every week for him, he could become a dominant quarterback in the immediate future.
His first few weeks have already shown that he is as advertised and wasn’t just a product of the Alabama offense. His play should only get better from here on out, which should be a scary thought to opposing defenses.
