NFL Draft 2020: Best pick made by each NFC East team
New York Giants: Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama
Round 2, 36th Overall
The New York Giants began their 2020 NFL Draft haul with the selection of offensive tackle Andrew Thomas at No. 4 overall. Thomas is a good, safe offensive tackle prospect who should be able to come in and fill an immediate position of need for New York. Placing Thomas on the Giants’ offensive line should immediately help their entire offense, as he will help open up holes for Saquon Barkley in the run game and create extra time in the pocket for Daniel Jones.
As strong as the Thomas pick was, the selection of Xavier McKinney in the second round was even better. McKinney is the best safety prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft class and he should be able to come in and make an immediate impact for the Giants’ defense.
McKinney shows impressive playmaking skills all over the field. He is a tough and aggressive in-the-box defender who can help defend the run also shines in man-to-man coverage. McKinney also shows plenty of ability on the back-end, pairing impressive range and ball skills to shine as a deep zone defender.
Simply put, McKinney can do it all at the safety position and should be able to come in and play a major role right away for the New York Giants. He was a legitimate first-round talent in the 2020 NFL Draft who the Giants were able to snag in the second round.
