NFL Draft 2020: Best pick made by each AFC West team
Los Angeles Chargers: K.J. Hill, WR, Ohio State
Round 7, 220th Overall
I think it’s fair to say that I am not the biggest fan of the Los Angeles Chargers’ 2020 NFL Draft class. Taking Justin Herbert at No. 6 overall was not a great start. Herbert has all of the physical tools needed to be a star at the next level, but his lack of pocket presence and tendency to panic against pressure are major concerns. I just never see Herbert turning into a good enough NFL quarterback to warrant the sixth overall pick.
I did not hate the Chargers trading back into the first round to take linebacker Kenneth Murray, but it did seem like an odd move for this team. I would have thought that any aggressive move up would be used to take an offensive tackle to protect Herbert, but they did not address the position at all in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Chargers did make some interesting moves on Day 3, adding running back Joshua Kelly in the fourth round, wide receiver Joe Reed in the fifth and safety Alohi Gilman in the sixth. However, when I sat down and looked at their 2020 NFL Draft class, their final selection, seventh-round receiver K.J. Hill, stood out as my favorite pick.
Hill is not an impressive athlete at the wide receiver position. He is not big and he lacks any sort of deep speed needed to make plays down the field. That being said, Hill is an extremely smooth and instinctive receiver in the middle of the field who runs crisp routes and shows soft hands.
Hill has a knack for getting open in the short to intermediate range and can create a bit after the catch. In reality, any of these Day 3 picks could have been the choice here, but personally, I like the value of snagging a Hill in the slot. I like his chances of becoming a playmaker out of the slot for this team.
