2020 NFL Draft: Putting a letter grade on all 32 first-round picks
It always felt like the New York Giants were going to take an offensive tackle here. I know we flirted with Isaiah Simmons here in some mock drafts, but we should have known better. The need for an offensive tackle was there and they were plenty of worthy options at the position. On top of that, we know that general manager Dave Gettleman loves big human beings.
Andrew Thomas being the pick for the Giants at No. 4 doesn’t surprise me. I think that Jedrick Wills Jr. is better and would have gone in that direction with this pick. That being said, Thomas is a rock-solid and safe choice who also makes a ton of sense for this team.
Thomas is a big and powerful offensive tackle who shines in both the run game in pass protection. He is not the most athletic player up front, but he moves better than he is given credit for, showing enough foot quickness to get out in space and make blocks at the second level.
Thomas also shows incredible on-field awareness, always seeming to understand where the pressure is coming from and taking care of his responsibility. He also does a great job of manipulating edge rushers and letting them fly upfield, giving his quarterback a clear lane to step up and make a throw down the field.
Whether Thomas begins his career at right or left tackle, he is going to be an immediate impact player up front for the New York Giants. They could have done better at No. 4, but it’s hard to argue against getting a player who clearly helps both Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley.
