Jaguars 7-round mock draft: Building around Gardner Minshew
By Evan Bachman
In order to give Gardner Minshew the best chance possible at succeeding they need to improve their tackle situation. Last year’s second round pick Jawaan Taylor had a solid rookie season and should be a starter long-term, but they need an upgrade over Cam Robinson, who graded as the 70th ranked tackle last season out of 81 qualified tackles, according to Pro Football Focus.
Tristan Wirfs is an intriguing prospect who has a ton of potential. He’s 6-foot-5, 322 pounds and moves pretty well for a man for that big. The best part of his game, however, is his ridiculous strength. He simply manhandles defenders at times on film. He’s always firing off the snap as a run blocker and he could become an absolute mauler in that area.
He put on a show at the combine posting a 4.85 40 yard dash, a modern offensive linemen record 36.5-inch vertical leap, and a tied for modern offensive linemen record 10-foot-1-inch broad jump, according to NFL.com. This performance showed just how athletic he is and made him a likely top 10-12 pick.
The Jaguars have a big need at cornerback after trading Jalen Ramsey and A.J Bouye. D.J. Hayden is a good slot corner, but neither Rashaan Melvin or Tre Herndon can be relied upon, so they need to draft a corner early or they’re going to have a very hard time defending the pass the next year.
Trevon Diggs is the brother of the now Bills star wide receiver Stefon Diggs. He actually started his career at Alabama as a wide receiver before switching to corner and it was a good decision because he has become a good prospect at corner. He has the size (6-foot-2, 207 pounds) and athelticism combination to develop into high-level corner.
Last year he had a fantastic season except for the LSU game against Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Burrow where he got torched a few times. He earned a 90.1 coverage grade from PFF, which is great and doing that in the SEC makes me confident that he can produce well in the NFL as well.
