Round 1

LB. Clemson. Isaiah Simmons. 4. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 31

Gettleman has never traded down and has never taken an offensive lineman in the first round. But he could buck his trend if he wants the best “hog molly” offensive tackles with the 4th pick or trading down. However, if the Giants don’t address offensive tackle with their first pick, Simmons is the next best option. Their defense desperately needs a playmaker and a player like him fits the bill.

The hybrid safety/ linebacker can play all around the defense as a versatile defender. The Clemson freak of nature can do-it-all and make an impact wherever he is lined up. The redshirt junior at 6’4″ 238 pounds could be the key piece that could elevate a below-average Giants defense. The depth they have at inside linebacker now (Martinez, Mayo, and Ryan Connelly) can allow the Giants to deploy Simmons in multiple positions.

In this mock draft, I have them addressing the linebacker position first. Even though they have not drafted a linebacker in the first round since Carl Banks in 1984, Simmons can be more than a traditional three-down linebacker.

New defensive coordinator Patrick Graham can utilize him in so many different ways in their 3-4 defense; as he had 28.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, four interceptions, 20 pass deflections, and six forced fumbles in his career. Not many safeties and linebackers get taken this early but with his rare talent, Isaiah Simmons is worth it as a defender of many talents.
