(Finally) Trade for OT Trent Williams

The Browns and Redskins were apparently talking trade for OT Trent Williams prior to the NFL Trade Deadline.

Nothing materialized, partly (largely) because the Redskins not only drive a hard bargain, they are almost impossible to negotiate with as a front office when it comes to stuff like this.

Washington made it known all year that Williams was not available, then they were asking for a ridiculous return for him when they finally decided to do the right thing and put him on the trade block.

After the 2019 season, Williams has one year on his contract. The Browns really need some stability at tackle and as the price for Williams continues to plummet, I think it’s fair to assume he could be had for as low as a third-round pick in the offseason.

If the Browns can get that kind of deal done — they have an extra third-round pick as of right now thanks to the Duke Johnson trade — they will be in great shape to approach the 2020 NFL Draft with some flexibility in round one.

There’s no guarantee one or both of Tristan Wirfs (Iowa) and Andrew Thomas (Georgia) will be available with Cleveland’s top selection. Therefore, we’re not going to assume that.

There are at least three teams ahead of the Browns in the draft order right now (Redskins, Broncos, Jets) who have a desperate need at offensive tackle. The Browns need to do what they can to secure a player like Williams so their draft strategy can be freed up a bit.
