Sale of the Carolina Panthers

Pittsburgh Steelers minority owner and hedge fund manager David Tepper’s purchase of the Carolina Panthers for approximately $2.2-2.3 billion is expected to be approved by league ownership.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is the subject of a team and league investigation into misconduct in the workplace. Richardson later announced his plans to sell the team for what is expected to be a record price for an NFL franchise.

Tepper’s agreement with Richardson will require 24 yays from the other 31 NFL teams, which is likely to happen. What Tepper does with his ownership with the Steelers isn’t clear, though it’s likely he’ll have to sell his 5% stake of the team.

Don’t expect any drastic changes to the franchise from a location or structure perspective. Richardson reportedly agreed to sell the team to Tepper despite his bid not being the highest because of his commitment to the Carolina area and the people already in place within the organization.
