NFL Owners Meetings will begin in Atlanta on Monday

In the midst of the quietest period of the NFL offseason the NFL owners meetings will commence in Atlanta. There, future event sites will be announced, rule changes could be implemented, and the sale of a team could be approved.

Also expected to be on the docket is a league stance on the Supreme Court ruling lifting a national ban on sports gambling, the National Anthem

Here’s a rundown of what is expected to happen in Atlanta at the NFL owners meetings.

Statement on Sports Gambling

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released the official league statement on the ruling late Monday morning. As expected, Goodell stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the league and outlined four core principals he wishes Congress to act on to protect the league and consumers:

  1. Substantial consumer protections
  2. Sports league can protect content and intellectual property from those who attempt to use/steal it
    1. Editor note: Likely the use of logos and player likenesses in casinos/sportsbooks
  3. Fans will have access to official, reliable league data
  4. Law enforcement will have the resources, monitoring, and enforcement tools necessary to protect fans and penalize bad actors here at home and abroad

Goodell says the league will also work to educate players, coaches, and other team/league personnel about what the ruling means to them and how it affects the league.
