NFL teams looking for a new head coach have a new list of names to watch

The NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel, which has included former general managers such as Charley Casserly, Bill Polian, and Ron Wolf, releases lists of potential general manager and head coach candidates for prospective teams. This year the panel recommended 11 names for teams looking to hire a new head coach.

Of the 11 coaches suggested, 6 specialize on offense, 4 on defense, and 1 on special teams. Philadelphia, New England, Kansas City, and Minnesota each have two names on the list.

Here are the 11 coaches in alphabetical order according to Mike Lombardi of The Ringer:

More from NFL News

Dan Campbell (Assistant Head Coach/TE coach, Saints)

  • Jim Bob Cooter (Offensive Coordinator, Lions)
  • John DeFilippo (Quarterbacks Coach, Eagles)
  • George Edwards (Defensive Coordinator, Vikings)
  • Josh McDaniels (Offensive Coordinator, Patriots)
  • Matt Nagy (Offensive Coordinator, Chiefs)
  • Matt Patricia (Defensive Coordinator, Patriots)
  • Jim Schwartz (Defensive Coordinator, Eagles)
  • Pat Shurmur (Offensive Coordinator, Vikings)
  • Dave Toub (Special Teams Coach, Chiefs)
  • Mike Vrabel (Defensive Coordinator, Texans)
  • Steve Wilks (Defensive Coordinator, Panthers)
  • Campbell, Shurmur, Schwartz, and McDaniels each have NFL head coaching experience before returning to coordinator roles and will likely be atop most lists. Campbell served solely as an interim head coach in Miami after Joe Philbin was fired early in the season.

It’s also key to note the coaching trees many of these coordinators come out of. The most notable is Andy Reid having worked with many of the names in Philadelphia and Kansas City.

For teams looking to draft a quarterback such as the Chicago Bears and New York Giants, McDaniels is an intriguing option. Having seen the success Philadelphia and Los Angeles have had with their young quarterbacks being surrounded by offensive gurus and former quarterbacks the Patriots offensive coordinator and Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo are key targets.

Teams with an established quarterback such as Indianapolis might look towards Jim Schwartz or Matt Patricia to clean up their defense and right the ship.

Thus far only Ben McAdoo of the Giants has lost his job, but many more are expected to receive a pink slip on New Years Day when the final regular season game is played.
