Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, and the Cleveland Browns have done just that

With new leadership in the Cleveland Browns front office, another sense of direction is being felt throughout the organization. Since Jimmy Haslam became the principal owner of the Browns in 2012 the organization has drafted four quarterbacks (Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel, Cody Kessler, DeShone Kizer), started 12 (Kizer, Kevin Hogan, Kessler, Josh McCown, Robert Griffin III, Manziel, Brian Hoyer, Connor Shaw, Austin Davis, Weeden, Jason Campbell, and Thad Lewis) and played four additional non-starters (Colt McCoy, Josh Johnson, Charlie Whitehurst, Terrelle Pryor), all under four different head coaches.

Without a playoff win since the days of Bill Belichick and Vinny Testaverde in 1994 Cleveland is the epitome of failure to the highest degree.

With John Dorsey leading the way it’s time for the Browns to go in a new direction and sign a veteran quarterback in free agency.

Even under borderline starters such as McCown and Hoyer we saw the Browns at least be competitive and win a handful of games. Perhaps a more accomplished veteran could get the Browns over the hump and back into legitimacy.

With $118 million in cap space going into the offseason Cleveland can afford to splurge on veterans. While they shouldn’t go for a “Dream Team” look with the most expensive players at each position they can afford to overpay for talent, especially at quarterback.

Kirk Cousins will likely become the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history despite a stingy record with Washington. Cousins has been among the more clutch quarterbacks in the league after collecting seven fourth quarter comebacks in the last three seasons, more than Tomy Brady, Drew Brees, and Ben Roethlisberger. He also leads the NFL in game-winning drives this season with four.

Instead of drafting another boom or bust quarterback this year the Browns could look at skilled players such as Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick or Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. Finding a replacement for Joe Thomas at left tackle could also be an option for Cleveland if they decide to pass on a quarterback in the first round.
