Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is already due to miss the first four games of the season thanks to the DeflateGate suspension, but an injury will now force him to miss preseason reps

Tom Brady has not had a great 2016 thus far. He was knocked out of the playoffs by Peyton Manning, forced to serve a four game suspension for his role in DeflateGate, and now he is dealing with a thumb injury.

Prior to Thursday evenings preseason game, Brady was attempting to dislodge something from his cleats with a pair of scissors. The scissors evidentially slipped, and sliced Brady’s right thumb.

Backup Jimmy Garoppolo made the start against the Chicago Bears in Brady’s absence.

CSN New England reporter Tom Curran first reported Brady’s injury, the extent of which is not fully known. Brady’s agent Don Yee said the veteran quarterback is okay, but will need time to recover.

Garoppolo completed 12/16 pass attempts in the first half against the Bears. He completed a 16-yard touchdown to A.J. Derby, and finished the series with a two-point conversion pass to receiver Chris Hogan.

With Brady missing the first four games of the regular season, Garoppolo will take the reins to start the year. New England drafted Jacoby Brissett out of N.C. State to back-up Garoppolo, and develop in the Patriots organization.
