NFL Trade Rumors: Are the Rams Still Interested in Nick Foles?
By Joe Wedra
Just a few weeks back, we heard Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams rumors rumbling. Now, in this offseason edition of NFL Trade Rumors, we take a look at whether or not this trade opportunity still makes sense. Can the Philadelphia Eagles afford to make a move?
How Did We Get Here?
This one isn’t too complicated. Both fan-bases are getting a bit antsy with their respective QB situations. Foles/Eagles is still a very raw situation, while Bradford/Rams has proven to be anything but secure with the signal-caller’s injury history.
The rumors (reported originally by NJ.com) came out towards the end of January, leaving some to wonder if they have died off. Here’s what Eliot Shorr-Parks, the author of the original article, said:
"The Eagles apparent indecision on what to do with quarterback Nick Foles has intrigued teams around the league, and possible suitors are beginning to emerge.According to a person familiar with the situation, but who requested anonymity, the St. Louis Rams have interest in Foles should the Eagles decide to trade him this offseason."
Certainly interesting — does it make sense?
What Needs to Happen?
Folks moving from Philadelphia is going to take a lot. First, the Eagles must be sure they can get Marcus Mariota in the 2015 NFL Draft. That’s what makes this so complicated.
Can the Eagles wait until they see Mariota slide to #10 (St. Louis’ pick) before they pull the trigger on a Foles trade?
That seems unlikely.
Could they spark a deal with St. Louis before the Draft, stockpiling picks to make a blockbuster deal on April 30th?
That one seems even more risky.
When exploring all potential avenues, where are we seeing that this “trade rumor” makes any logical sense? The Rams and Eagles may have minimal interest, but the risk/reward seems way too low for Philadelphia. How can they make a move pre-draft without knowing their future?
Potential Solutions
The Chip Kelly/Mariota connection is an interesting storyline, but let’s not dig too deep here. A “storyline” is exactly what this boils down to.
Many would argue that it’s in each team’s best interest to keep their respective QBs — it’s certainly looking look like that might be the case in the next few months.
