2012 NFL Mock Draft Seattle Seahawks

This is our Seattle Seahawks 7 round mock draft. The Seahawks desperately need a quarterback but the more they win the less likely they get one in the first round. Everything that the Seahawks have done with their quarterback situation since Pete Carroll indicates that they would prefer a mobile quarterback. Maybe the Seahawks trade up, but with the Colts, Dolphins, and Redskins all picking ahead of the Seahawks as it currently stands it seems like the Seahawks might pass on a QB in the first round.

In order to prepare for this mock I recently chatted with Seahawksdraftblog founder Rob Staton.

I believe the Seahawks have all of their picks for this draft, if I’m mistaken someone help me out!

1st round: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

I started writing this mock last nights Eagles game! Well based on where the Seahawks are picking this is a pure value pick. Lynch is supremely talented, but so is Richardson. The Seahawks want to be a big tough physical football team which is why they drafted James Carpenter and John Moffit and signed Robert Gallery. It’s why they have big cornerbacks. The Seahawks biggest need is Quarterback, but if Griffin III, Barkley, and Luck are all gone they could pass on Landry Jones. There isn’t a great DE worth selecting here and no one worth Richardson’s value.

2nd Round:  Ryan Tannehilll QB Texas A and M

Tannehill is very athletic, a former Aggies Wide receiver who became their starting quarterback late last year. Tannehill has a lot of physical tools, but he lacks some refinement. He’s very mobile and has a live arm. If the Seahawks can get Tannehilll I think they would be happy and their offense would actually look pretty good heading into next year with Sideny Rice, Zach Miller, Mike Williams Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Trent Richardson, a lot of high picks on the OL and Ryan Tannehill.

3rd Round: Desmond Trufant CB Washington Huskies

In all honest I didn’t even think about the Marcus Trufant connection when I first made this mock. I was just thinking about a taller, longer cornerback who could develop into the kind of physical cornerback Carrol prefer that could be available in the third round. And I settled on Desmond Trufant. Trufant is awesomely talented. Trufant is fast, long, and could develop into a very nice press corner at the N.F.L. leve. the fact that he’s Marcus Trufant’s brother? I don’t know how’d that impact things. I think Xavier Rhodes would be great for the Seahawks but I think if he doesn’t get a first round grade from the advisory committee that he’ll return to school for his redshirt junior year.

4th Round: Trevor Guyton, DL, California Golden Bears

Trevor Guyton plays in a 34 now and could be a great fit in a 34 in the N.F.L, but I have n doubt either about his ability to play in the Seahawks defense. Guyton doesn’t have elite measurables, but will be a player that coaches and fans really appreciate because of his hustle, discipline, and versatility.

5th Round: B.J. Cunningham, WR, Michigan State

Cunningham has good size at 6’2 205 pounds and has been very productive at times this year. He doesn’t have elite speed though and it could cause his draft stock to drop. Wide receivers, OL, DL and cornerbacks are positions that seem to get drafted by every team at some point each year. You just simply can’t have too many of them. The Seahawks like many of their positions have shown a penchant to prefer bigger Wide receivers. This is also a value pick.

6th Round: J.B. Shugarts, OL, Ohio State

Shugarts is just to add depth to the offensive line. He’s not a big strong monster like the other linemen the Seahawks have drafted though so perhaps I should have looked at a different player here

7th round: Tyler Nielsen, LB,  Iowa Hawkeyes

Nielsen has good athletic ability and can be a special teams demon as well as a  developmental linebacker. Nielsen is a fine pick here. ONce teams get past the fourth round what the are really looking for are specialists, special team players, and just guys that can make a N.F.L. roster because the vast majority of day three picks don’t amount to long term success in the N.F.L.
