2012 3 Round Mock Draft: Andrew Luck all but guarenteed to be a Colt
By Editorial Staff
Round 2
1. Indianapolis Colts Luke Kuechly MLB BC
I feel like the Colts should get weapons for Luck or better protection but Kuechly represented too much value. Colts need a new leader in the defense and Kuechly would give that to them. Plays a lot like Laurinaitis and is the same kind of leadership presence. Colts need talent on both sides of the ball.
2. Minnesota Vikings Kelechi Osemele OG Iowa State
Kalil and Oseleme is a dream scenario for the Vikings. The Vikings OL is now complete, much to the appreciation of Peterson and Ponder. With this kind of upgrade the offense is only a #1 WR from being a very sound offense.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars Stephon Gilmore CB SC
With Rasheem Mathis being a FA and recovering from injury it is important the Jaguars get a sound CB this offseason. Gilmore has elite potential but is inconsistent. Teams will love his aggressive style play one minute and be angered the next. Still, Gilmore was productive more times than not and should go in this range.
4. Philadelphia Eagles (T) Mike Adams OT Ohio State
Now that the run defense has improved it is about time the Eagles start on the OL. Adams is a monster of a man that would fill the hole at RT. Herremans has played well but is a better OG than OT. Adams and Peters give the Eagles a solid OT tandem.
5. Washington Redskins Don’t’a Hightower ILB Alabama
Redskins will probably let both ILB starters go. Perry Riley is showing potential to take over one spot but the other spot is a problem. Hightower would be a great pickup in the second round. He has great size, speed, and intelligence. He is a very capable run stuffer and blitzer. Redskins LB unit would be one of the better young units in the NFL.
6. Carolina Panthers Mohammed Sanu WR Rutgers
Panther upgraded the secondary in Round 1 and now need to surround Newton with playmakers. Steve Smith is aging and might have 2 more seasons left…besides him it is a bunch of average players. Sanu is a playmaker flat out…he would complement Smith very well.
7. St. Louis Rams TJ McDonald FS USC
Everyone keeps mocking CB’s to the Rams but the Rams have solid CB talent….its just on the IR. What they do not have is sound safety play outside of Mitchell. McDonald gives Spagnuolu an elite, athletic, versatile safety he has not had in St. Louis.
8. Miami Dolphins Kevin Zeitler OG Wisconsin
Zeitler is one of the most under rated prospects in the draft. Just like Moffitt was last year’ he has the ability to come in right away and dominate in the run game. Zeitler has manhandled NFL caliber talent one on one all season long. Dolphins need better protection for their new franchise QB.
9. Cleveland Browns Jayron Hosley CB VT
Hosley’s groin injury is limiting his effectiveness. When healthy he is a ball hawk that the Browns would love to have. Haden gets avoided so it is imperative the Browns have another CB who can make plays.
10. Philadelphia Eagles Lavonte David OLB Nebraska
Eagles acquire an elite OLB. Eagles might need one more upgrade but David and Coples have the run defense looking much improved. Eagles team will rebound next season…I would put money on it.
11. Kansas City Chiefs Frank Alexander DE/OLB Oklahoma
Houston has been a bust so far and it is unsafe to think he can improve. Sure he might but pass rushing depth is never a bad things. Alexander has shown the ability to play LB from time to time at Oklahoma in a 3-4. Tandem of Hali and Alexander will not allow the Chiefs to be last next year.
12. Buffalo Bills Dwayne Allen TE Clemson
Chandler is a nice player but is not special. He is valuable in the red zone…Allen is special. He is a weapon in short to medium routes, a punishing blocker, and a red zone weapon. Chandler and Allen would give the Bills multiple TE’s to throw to and more weapons for Fitzpatrick is always a good thing.
13. Seattle Seahawks Ryan Tannehill QB Texas AM
Desperate teams make desperate decisions. Don’t believe me? Why did the Seahawks sign Taveris Jackson and trade for Charlie Whitehurst???? That is why the Seahawks draft Tannehill.
14. San Diego Chargers Mark Barron SS Alabama
Chargers defense has not been what it was in years past. Talent is getting older and it is time the Chargers replenished its losses. Upshaw will finally replace Merriman in Round 1 and Barron will fill the SS hole the Chargers currently have. Smart, strong, Crimson Tide players are the cure for a weak defense.
15. Tampa Bay Buccs Lamar Miller RB Miami
Buccs offense is limited because of its lack of speed. Blount is a nice back but is not a receiving threat and lacks breakaway speed. Miller would combine with Blount to form a formidable running duo.
16. Tennessee Titans Cordy Glenn OG Georgia
Titans get a mauler to improve their interior OL. With Glenn at RG I fully expect a bounce back year from CJ2K….considering he still wants to play.
17. Denver Broncos Chris Polk RB Washington
Broncos are winning with defense and a very strong run game. McGahee and Ball are okay, but nothing special. Polk is that strong runner with good hands that would excel in Fox’s offense. With Polk and Tebow running…the Broncos will be tough to beat.
18. New York Giants Montee Ball RB Wisconsin
Ball has more talent that this spot indicates, but every year RB’s fall come draft day. Giants get great value which is Jerry Reese’s draft philosophy. Ball and Bradshaw will be a formidable run duo.
19. New York Jets Bruce Irvin OLB WV
Jets cannot leave the 2012 draft without 1-2 pass rushers. Irvin has been down this season and I think he is a major bust risk but is worth a pick this late in the second round. Rex Ryan will find someway to use this kid.
20. Detroit Lions Michael Brewster C Ohio State
Brewster’s stock has fallen lately. His Senior season was hit and miss…that being said he has over 3 years of good tape and I think the Lions will jump on this kind of value in Round 2. Brewster is a strong center that has had trouble snapping the ball from shot gun…so did Mike Pouncey and he went 14th. Brewster and Jones are good starts to rebuilding the Lions OL.
21. Atlanta Falcons Nate Potter OT Boise State
Falcons need a center, RG, and LT. Potter is the best available out of those positions. Potter is an under rated LT prospect. He needs to get stronger but has faired well run blocking…watch the Georgia game. His pass protection is near elite as well. In 3 years this Boise State OL has averaged under 1 sack per game and Potter is a big reason for that.
22. Cincinnati Bengals Markelle Martin SS/FS Oklahoma State
Bengals keep improving the defense with this pick. Martin is a solid safety prospect who can play both SS and FS. I think he would fit Zimmer’s aggressive defense. Jenkins and Martin finally have this secondary young and up coming.
23. Chicago Bears Brandon Thompson DT Clemson
Bears defensive line has some problems. Okoye is a FA and Melton has not sustained his success. It is unclear if Peae is going to be good or not but even if he is it is imperative the Bears acquire more DT talent. Thompson is the interior disruptor the Bears need.
24. Houston Texans Kendall Wright WR Baylor
Texans have Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels and lack any other play maker in the pass game…besides at RB. We have said this for far too long. Kendall Wright gives the Texans an elite #2 target who can stretch the field.
25. Pittsburgh Steelers Robert Lester FS Alabama
Steelers do not generate enough turnovers…a big reason for this is besides Polamalu the rest of the secondary usually have 0-2 interceptions yearly. With the pass rush the Steelers have this will not do. Lester is an elite center field safety who can make offenses pay for attacking down the field too often.
26. Dallas Cowboys Billy Winn DL Boise State
Cowboys keep patching up the defensive front seven. Winn and Lewis will make Rob Ryan very happy. I sense a lot of sacks for the Cowboys defense next season.
27. New England Pats (T) Jerel Worthy DT MSU
Patriots defense needs some nastiness. Lewis and Worthy will deliver that in spades. Both players play with great emotion and aggression. It is about time the Patriots started improving their front seven.
28. San Francisco 49ers Casey Hayward CB Vanderbilt
49ers pass defense could use some more talent. Carlos Rogers is having a career year and could use a running mate. Casey Hayward would give the 49ers a very opportunistic CB to partner with Rogers.
29. New England Patriots Chase Thomas OLB Stanford
Chase Thomas has been very productive for two seasons in Stanford’s 3-4 defenses. Patriots would love to get another good pass rusher. With Lewis being a risky investment; Thomas is a safe one that has a lower ceiling. Good combination of investment. Patriots secondary issues revolve around a lack of pass rush.
30. New Orleans Saints Travis Lewis OLB Oklahoma
Travis Lewis had injuries this season but has had a productive career at Oklahoma. I know others push them further down but I just cant do it…he is a capable blitzer and is solid in coverage. Another prospect who a good team is buying low waiting for their investment to blow up.
31. Baltimore Ravens Juron Criner WR Arizona
Too much value for Newsome to resist. Torrey Smith has been coming on and Boldin looks much better in year 2. That being said Smith will never be a #1 WR and Boldin is getting up there in age. Criner has Sidney Rice like ability and would complement Smith nicely.
32. Green Bay Packers Micah Hyde CB Iowa
Hyde might stay for his senior season and work on his craft but if he comes out, Green Bay would be a great destination. Solid players to teach Hyde and allow him to develop would be an ideal situation. Hyde is an aggressive player who excels in press coverage.
