USC quarterback Jayden Maiava entered Week 8 with something to prove, and he may have walked away with something even bigger: a legitimate place in the first-round conversation for the 2027 NFL Draft.
Maiava delivered a statement performance in USC's upset victory over Ohio State, putting NFL scouts on notice and adding another intriguing name to an already crowded quarterback race. But he wasn't the only prospect making headlines over the weekend.
Oklahoma State's Drew Mestemaker continues to strengthen his QB1 argument, while Florida running back Jadan Baugh suddenly has questions to answer after struggling against Georgia. This week's NFL Draft Rapid Fire examines the prospects making their moves, those losing ground and a Bulldogs defense loaded with potential first-round talent.
Jayden Maiava makes his big statement
If USC quarterback Jayden Maiava wasn't already in the conversation as a Day 1 quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft, he settled any argument surrounding that with a big-boy performance in USC's upset win over Ohio State.
Highlighted in this week's 2027 NFL Draft Prospect Watch as a player with a chance to rescue his first-round draft stock, Maiava took on the challenge and met the test in leading the Trojans to a 30-18 victory.
Maiava, who completed 15 of 22 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown, set the tone and spooked the Ohio State defense with a 69-yard touchdown strike to freshman Trent Mosley on USC's opening drive.

The play was all Mosley in yards after the catch, but Maiava's ability to get the ball out quickly into open space created the opportunity. Maiava also connected with tight end Mark Bowman on a 70-yard catch-and-run that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by King Miller, giving USC some much-needed cushion.
With Maiava not getting enough attention as one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft, his performances over the last few weeks should have scouts taking notice, particularly those representing teams selecting near the end of the first round or early in the second.
Three quarterback-hungry teams that come to mind are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts. Of those three teams, Minnesota presents an intriguing landing spot given the offensive weapons already in place for a young quarterback to succeed.
Of course, there is still quite a bit of football ahead, but Maiava passed a major test against one of the nation's toughest defenses. More importantly, he showed he belongs in the conversation with the other quarterbacks fighting to hear their names called on Day 1.
The question now isn't whether Maiava deserves first-round consideration. It's how high he can climb if he keeps playing like this.
Stock under scrutiny: Jadan Baugh no longer running away as RB1

Speaking of prospects to watch in Week 8, outstanding Florida running back Jadan Baugh did not rise to the occasion against a stout Georgia defense.
NFL Mocks' John Blair highlighted the matchup against the Bulldogs as a major opportunity for Baugh to show his dominance on the ground against a defense allowing just 91.4 rushing yards per game.
Well, the dominant defense won that battle.
Georgia held Baugh to just 38 yards on 17 rushing attempts in Florida's loss to the Bulldogs. For a running back who has established himself as one of the nation's best, it was a frustrating afternoon that raises some interesting questions about his status as RB1 in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Baugh is still one of the top running backs in the nation, but what is being exposed is just how much Florida's offense depends on his production. When opposing defenses take him out of the game, the Gators have a tough time getting anything going offensively.
That could be more of a testament to Baugh's importance and impact than a reflection of his limitations. Teams are stacking the box to prevent him from breaking big plays, but the talented running back must find other ways to impact games when defenses are determined to shut him down.
Against a Georgia defense loaded with NFL talent, that was easier said than done.
The question going forward is whether Baugh can rediscover his dominant ways and, more importantly, whether he can do it against defenses specifically scheming to take him out of the game.
One disappointing performance shouldn't knock Baugh off the RB1 throne, but it does open the door for other running backs to make their case.
Stock still climbing: Drew Mestemaker the touchdown maker
Turning our attention back to the quarterback prospects, Oklahoma State's Drew Mestemaker is quickly establishing himself as a legitimate QB1 candidate in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Yes, Miami's Darian Mensah, Notre Dame's CJ Carr and Ole Miss's Trinidad Chambliss will have something to say about that, but all Mestemaker continues to do is find ways to get the football into the end zone.
In our latest full first-round mock draft, we have Mestemaker going No. 3 overall to the Miami Dolphins. With Malik Willis under center, Miami isn't necessarily guaranteed to select a quarterback, but Mestemaker could be the type of talent the Dolphins can't afford to pass up if he declares for the draft.
In a wild 51-49 loss to Iowa State on Saturday, Mestemaker completed 27 of 42 passes for 323 yards and five touchdowns.
It was another loss for Oklahoma State, but Mestemaker continues to lead an offense capable of keeping the Cowboys competitive in high-scoring battles. Opposing teams are being forced to outshoot the talented dual-threat quarterback, and that says something about his ability to elevate the players around him.
Imagine if Mestemaker were the gunslinger on one of the nation's elite teams with even more talent surrounding him?
NFL scouts should already be warming up to Mestemaker as a potential QB1. If he were putting up these numbers at a program like Ohio State or Texas, there would be little doubt about his place among the top quarterback prospects in the country.
Mestemaker may not be winning enough football games, but he continues to win the attention of NFL evaluators.
And with Maiava making his own statement against Ohio State, the race to become the top quarterback selected in the 2027 NFL Draft is only getting more interesting.
Stock up: Georgia's first-round defensive talent steps up
Circling back to Baugh's lackluster performance against Georgia, maybe we need to cut the Florida running back some slack.
After all, he was going up against a Bulldogs defense stacked with potential first-round talent.
In our latest full first-round mock draft, three Georgia defenders land among the top 25 selections, and each continues to make a strong case for hearing his name called early in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Chris Cole, LB: Cincinnati Bengals (No. 23)
Linebacker Chris Cole made one of the biggest defensive plays of the game against Florida, forcing a fumble and returning it 66 yards for a touchdown.
That type of impact is exactly why we have Cole landing with the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 23 overall.
The Bengals need more sideline-to-sideline playmaking at the second level of their defense, and Cole brings the athleticism, instincts and physicality to help address that need.
KJ Bolden, S: New England Patriots (No. 18)
After missing Georgia's matchup against Auburn, safety KJ Bolden returned to the field against Florida and continued to showcase why he is one of the top defensive backs in the 2027 NFL Draft.
In our latest mock draft, Bolden lands with the New England Patriots at No. 18 overall.
His presence in the secondary and instinctive playmaking ability would give New England a long-term option at safety to pair with second-year defender Craig Woodson.
Ellis Robinson IV, CB: New York Jets (No. 12)
Cornerback Ellis Robinson IV continues to make his case as one of the premier defensive prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Robinson recorded an interception against Florida and once again showed off the impressive press-man coverage skills that have made him one of the most intriguing cornerbacks in the class.
In our latest mock draft, Robinson goes No. 12 overall to the New York Jets, where he would have an opportunity to quickly establish himself as the team's top cornerback.
And Georgia's defensive talent doesn't stop with those three potential first-round picks.
Linebacker Raylen Wilson, edge rushers Quintavius Johnson and Gabe Harris, and cornerback Demello Jones are other Bulldogs prospects worth keeping an eye on. Jones also recorded an interception against Florida, adding another impressive moment for a defense loaded with future NFL talent.
Like past draft classes, the 2027 NFL Draft could be filled with Georgia Bulldogs.
And we're just talking about the defensive side of the football.
If Saturday proved anything, it's that Georgia's defense remains one of the toughest tests for NFL Draft hopefuls, and one of the best places for scouts to find their next defensive playmaker.
