Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles is the definition of an athletic, multi-dimensional linebacker.  Playing in a defense heralded by Arvell Reese and Caleb Downs, Styles isn’t getting all the shine, but NFL scouts are taking notice of his stardom ability at the next level.

Styles, a former safety, is the perfect blend of athleticism, speed and physicality who has used that skillset to become one of the more reliable linebacker prospects entering the draft. His ability to cover tight ends and running backs, along with his ability to spy mobile quarterbacks will be essential in the NFL.

As a dependable tackler, Styles can also get after the QB depended on how he is utilized in a defense.  He showcased his ability as a defensive playmaker throughout the 2025 season at Ohio State.  The 6-foot-4, 243-pound linebacker racked up 81 total tackles with 0.5 sacks 1 forced fumble and 1 interception in becoming one of the top prospects to watch in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Sonny Styles has all the tools to dominate on the field

In his 2026 Big Board, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr has Sonny Styles ranked at No. 12 amongst the top 25 prospects in the nation.  This is due to the way Styles has adapted under Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, developing as one of the top linebackers in the nation.

Kiper Jr writes:

“You can tell Styles is a former safety; he has outstanding speed, and his burst allows him to spy the QB. Watch for him to dominate at the combine and in pre-draft testing. Styles is also a dependable tackler and closes in a flash. He really took the next step this season, even as he adapted to a new system under defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.”

Playing under a former NFL defensive coordinator and head coach in Patricia should help Styles continue to reach his ceiling at the NFL level.  Given his tackling, high motor and ability to spy dual-threat QBs, Styles is going to a hot commodity in the 2026 NFL draft.

Here are 3 NFL fits for the high-rising linebacker based on where he is expected to land in the draft.

3 NFL teams in position to land Sonny Styles

Dallas Cowboys

When thinking about the ability of Sonny Styles, one of the first teams that jump to mind are the Dallas Cowboys.  With two first round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Cowboys could have two shots at selecting Styles.  Wouldn’t it be ironic if they got the Ohio State linebacker with the pick they landed in the trade for Micah Parsons.  Now Styles is no Parsons, but he can impact the field in a different way as a hybrid type linebacker who can make plays all over the field, as he has showcased playing under Patricia.

Other first round options for the Cowboys: David Bailey (EDGE), Keldric Faulk (EDGE), Caleb Downs (S)

New York Giants:

In a trade back scenario, Styles would be a good fit for the New York Giants.  With a top 5 pick, it’s more likely the Giants will be in position to draft teammate Arvell Reese if they do go defense with their top pick.  If they do trade back, Styles is a perfect candidate who can help elevate the second line of defense for Giants.  Not only does he add speed, he has the natural instincts at the position who could be even more impactful given the talent the Giants already have in the front seven.

Other first round options for the Giants:  Arvell Reese (LB), Jordyn Tyson  (WR), Francis Mauigoa (OT/G)

Washington Commanders:

The Commanders top need is edge rusher, but if a second-level defender like Sonny Styles is available, he is a fit for a Washington team that does need to get younger and more dynamic on defense.  With Bobby Wagner up there in age, the Commanders need linebacker talent and Styles fits that mode, especially in Dan Quinns defense.  This is where playing under Patricia could hype Styles as an NFL-ready defender in position to make an impact Day 1 in the league.

Other first round options for the Commanders: Arvell Reese (LB), Peter Woods (DL), Rueben Bain Jr. (EDGE)
