Terrance Ferguson didn’t get the buzz or hype of top tight end prospects Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland, but this 2025 NFL Draft pick may end up being one of the big stories in the NFL as an offensive playmaker.
Did the Los Angeles Rams just do it again?
That is the question draft experts will be asking given the success of recent draft classes. In Ferguson, Sean McVay has found a tight end who he can get on the field alongside Tyler Higbee as the Rams coach loves to run two-tight end sets.
After showing off his speed at the NFL Combine (4.63 40-time), the Rams’ rookie saw his NFL stock go up and after selecting him in the second round, McVay and the Rams are looking to cash in.
How Terrance Ferguson can help diversify Rams’ offense
In his final season at Oregon, the big, athletic tight end had a career year with 43 receptions for 591 yards and three touchdowns. With his ability to run seam routes, break tackles and excel as a move blocker, Ferguson has a chance to really grow into his own in the Rams’ offense which is why NFL.com’s Dan Parr has him listed as one of the most pivotal rookies in the NFC West.
Parr writes:
“Are you fired up for some 12 personnel looks or what?! After trading out of the first round, the Rams made Ferguson their top pick of the draft midway through Round 2. With Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen also on the roster, Sean McVay has the personnel to hit defenses with a good share of two-TE sets, something the coach seems excited about. Ferguson is not a strong blocker right now, but he has the ball skills and size (6-5, 247) to become a nuisance for defenses in the short-to-intermediate passing game, as long as his groin injury doesn’t linger. That’s the type of player Matthew Stafford was missing for much of last season, when the Rams ranked dead last in receiving yards by tight ends.”
Hitting on those two-TE sets McVay likes to run, Parr hits on how impactful of a target Ferguson could be catching the ball from Stafford. Also, as a team that didn’t get much production out of the tight end position in 2024, inserting Ferguson into the mix will help the Rams morph into a more complete offense, especially if he lives up to the hype of the NFL Combine and praise, he has already received in training camp.
If he surpasses that hype, watch out NFC West.
In an offense that now features Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Tutu Atwell, Tyler Higbee and running back Kyren Williams, the rise of Feguson from the tight end position will make the Rams’ offense a tough one to defend.
