Top rookies of NFL Week 5: Sam LaPorta wins the Sam LaPorta award
By Beau Adams
Puka Nacua, a fifth-round pick, has been one of the season's biggest surprises. Leading the league in targets and receptions by Week 4, Nacua quickly established himself as a reliable target for Matthew Stafford. His early success is a testament to his football intelligence and ability to find space in even the tightest defenses.
Nacua has shown an uncanny knack for the game, leading the league in targets and receptions and ranking second in receiving yards in his first four weeks of NFL action.
The trust shown in Nacua by Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford is evident in his stellar early production, including scoring the walk-off touchdown against the Colts. With his performance, Nacua has firmly established himself as the top wideout in this talented class.
In Week 3, Nacua's 68-yard touchdown showcased his ability to make big plays, while his game-winning touchdown against the Colts underlined his value in high-pressure situations. Nacua's performances have drawn comparisons to fellow Rams' wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
Now, in Week 5, after Nacua won 3 of NFLMocks' Top Rookie WRs of the Week, he is expected to take a back seat in the Rams offense with the return of Cooper Kupp. The superstar rookie stood firm in Kupp's return, drawing several targets for seven catches and 71 yards, proving he was not a next-man-up fill-in. His second-quarter score gave the Rams the lead going into the half in what was almost a tremendous upset of the NFL's best. That secured him a fourth NFL Top Rookie of the Week award.
