Seahawks rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon a stand-out success in 2023 with Seattle
Although the Seattle Seahawks may not have made it to the playoffs despite showing potential at the start of the season, it's worth mentioning the players who stood out that season and proved to be a further asset for the team next season. One of those players is Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who's among the finalists for the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, along with other defensive rookies such as Jalen Carter, Will Anderson Jr, Joey Porter Jr, and Kobie Turner.
A first-round draft pick out of Illinois, it's no secret that Devon Witherspoon was a stand-out success in his college football days. Being a former Defensive Back of the Year winner and the first defensive back player out of Illinois to become an All-American, there's a reason Devon Witherspoon was one of the top prospects heading into the 2023 NFL Draft.
Devon Witherspoon's accomplishments in rookie season with Seahawks
Some could argue that Devin Witherspoon would be a top prospect for a first-round pick again if there were ever a re-draft, considering what he accomplished in his rookie season. What made Devon Witherspoon's rookie season especially stand out was the sixteen pass deflections he had, the most out of any NFL rookie this season.
It's worth noting that Devon Witherspoon has also made records in his first season with the Seahawks. For instance, in the Week 4 game against the New York Giants, Devon Witherspoon became the third NFL rookie in history to score two sacks and a pick-six interception, where he returned 97 yards for a touchdown.
It's safe to say that Devon Witherspoon is arguably living up to the hype of being a first-round draft pick. And even though the Seahawks have had issues with its team throughout the 2023 season, especially with quarterback Geno Smith's elbow injury affecting his playing, Devon Witherspoon's stand-out performance this season showcases the positive side of the Seahawks's overall team.
