Did the Kansas City Chiefs draft their next version of Tyreek Hill?

Selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the defending Super Bowl Champions added the speedy Xavier Worthy to the offensive arsenal of Patrick Mahomes.  Setting the NFL ablaze at the NFL Combine by shattering the combine record with a 4.21 40-yard dash time, the Chiefs were the last team the rest of the NFL wanted the Texas product to go to…yet they got him.

Although small in stature, Worthy is an explosive play waiting to happen no matter where he gets the ball.  He proved that during his final season at Texas with 75 receptions for 1,014 yards and 5 receiving touchdowns.  He is also a dangerous punt returner ranking second in the nation with 16.9 yards per punt return.  His potential has Mahomes grinning as he brings a similar impact to the Chiefs offense as Hill.  The big question will be whether his blazing speed and playmaking ability outweighs his thin flame as he enters the NFL at 5-11, 165 pounds.

What the Kansas City Chiefs could have in Xavier Worthy

Worthy already showed what he can be in the Chiefs’ offense with a couple of deep passes from Mahomes.  Expect more of that throughout the regular season, especially if second-year receiver Rashee Rice must serve a suspension at some point in the season.  In an offense with Rice, Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown, opposing defenses will have to pick their poison with Worthy on the field.

Although just a rookie, his speed and promise of ability give Chiefs head coach Andy Reid an element he hasn’t had since Hill.  But a great coach knows it will still take some time to really ease him into the mix although there will be flashes of what he will eventually be in the Chiefs’ offense.  In response to drafting Worthy, Reid said the Chiefs went after what and who they wanted.

“We wanted him, and we just felt that he started getting down there; somebody might jump us and pick him up,” Reid said of the draft day trade to select Worthy at No. 28.  “Brett (Veach) does a great job of this; he got a real good feel for the people that have interest in that position and that player and then where he needs to go to attack it.”

It’s hard to believe the Buffalo Bills gave up a chance to draft Worthy.  Maybe it will come back to haunt them and the rest of the league.

Bold prediction for the 2024 NFL season

Although it is unfair to compare or expect Worthy to be the weapon Hill was in the Chiefs’ offense right away, the connection between Mahomes and the rookie wide receiver will remind Chiefs Kingdom of the duo.

With targets like Kelce, Brown and Rice along with running back Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs use of Worthy will seem more like a luxury at times.  He is a deep threat who will make Mahomes a more dangerous quarterback.  He won’t quite have the rookie season Rice had, but he’ll catch over 50 passes for over 600 yards and 6 touchdowns.  His first touchdown will come in the season opener in an AFC Championship Game rematch with the Baltimore Ravens.  Worthy will have a memorable debut electrifying the home crowd with a long pass from Mahomes.

It will be the first of many to come in K.C.!
