All that trade noise that floated through the NFL prior to the season regarding Arizona Cardinals star safety Budda Baker will get louder as the NFL Trade Deadline approaches.
With all eyes on what the team will do with Kyler Murray, Baker is also a player teams around the NFL should be monitoring. On the path of a rebuild, the Cardinals are currently a 1-5 football team in the hunt for one of the top picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Although the team has shown some fight, highlighted by a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, building through the draft is the team’s best intention. What better way to build that draft capital and save money by getting something for Baker now instead of possibly losing him in 2024 free agency.
CBS Sports NFL writer Cody Benjamin highlights the reason the Cardinals could at least entertain a trade offer:
“The All-Pro resolved a brief contract dispute with Arizona by getting a pay raise prior to this season, only to land on injured reserve with a hamstring issue one week into the year. He's a do-it-all play-maker when healthy, but Jonathan Gannon's defense has been feistier than expected even without him; current starters Jalen Thompson and K'Von Wallace have both been active.”
That contract resolution only temporarily settled any beef between Baker and the Cardinals. The direction of the team this season could prompt the star safety to want to join a contending team who could use his services. On the flip side, the Cardinals would be smart to get another high round draft pick to help the rebuild and also allow players like Thompson and Wallace mentioned above to thrive in their roles.
If Baker is put on the trade block, multiple NFL teams will be blowing up the phones, but here are the 3 teams who should and probably will be salivating over the idea of adding a defensive stud like Budda Baker.
