AFC East Buzz: Aaron Rodgers, Bailey Zappe, Bills still believe, and Dolphins news
New England Patriots rolling with Bailey Zappe?
In Foxborough it looks like the Mac Jones era has officially ended. Well, at least that seems to be the indication as it seems the New England Patriots are preparing to start Bailey Zappe in a Week 13 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. This as reported by the Athletic's Jeff Howe.
After being benched in the team’s loss against the New York Giants, it appears Jones has literally thrown away his starting role for the Patriots, but with what the team doesn’t have at the quarterback position, it is hard to say the team won’t go back to Mac Jones if Zappe isn’t any better.
While the second-year quarterback was 2-0 as a starter in 2022, he hasn’t done much to snatch the job away from Jones in 2023. In fact, he has looked just as bad whenever he was given an opportunity. That leads to the question on whether any quarterback not named Tom Brady would be successful with what the Patriots are putting on the field offensively.
Obviously, Tom Brady isn’t walking through that door so Zappe could get an extended look as the team plays out the season. The only other options are Will Grier who was signed back to the practice squad and rookie QB/WR Malik Cunningham. If either of those players get an opportunity it will likely mean the Patriots best option will be who they may draft with a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The mighty have really fallen in New England.
