Is Malachi Fields a mid-round gem waiting to shine in the upcoming season for the New York Giants?  In this NFL Rookie Wide Receiver Watch, we showcase how the former Notre Dame star could be an X-factor on the field with the players who will be around him.

In his preseason debut, Fields showcased the traits that helped his draft stock soar during his final season at Notre Dame. The rookie wide receiver caught all three of his targets for 34 yards, including a touchdown from second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart in what Giants fans hope is the start of a productive connection.

Malachi Fields flashes NFL-ready traits

Noted as a big-bodied wide receiver who is fierce in contested catch situations, Fields displayed that on the 15-yard touchdown reception in which he caught the ball over a defender in the end zone while maintaining the body control and balance to stay inbounds for the score.  That one play was everything Dart valued in Fields when watching his college highlights.

"That was a big thing that I love about Malachi's tape coming out (of college) – was his ability to go make contested catches," Dart said via the team's official website. "I feel like he's a player that regardless of what route that he's on, just from his range and stature and his ability to have really good hands that he's never really out of a play. And he loves the game, he competes through the whistle. You see that in the way that not only he runs his routes but also the way that he blocks, so I think he's just been doing what he's been doing and I have a ton of faith in him."

How big can Malachi Fields' role become?

The Giants' offense has the potential to be one of the NFL's more intriguing units in 2026. With Cam Skattebo in the backfield, Darious Slayton returning, Odell Beckham Jr. back in New York, Isaiah Likely adding another weapon at tight end, and Malik Nabers expected back healthy, Dart will have no shortage of playmakers. That group also includes the third-round rookie, who could carve out an important role sooner rather than later.

The Giants entered the draft looking for another receiver capable of complementing Nabers, and Fields has an opportunity to become that player sooner than expected. Although New York didn't select him until the third round, his size, catch radius, and physical style give him a skill set that differs from the other receivers on the roster. Learning behind veterans like Beckham Jr. and Slayton while developing chemistry with Dart could accelerate his transition to the NFL.

Although Fields isn't a burner, his physicality and elite catch radius make him a natural red-zone weapon, something he already flashed during the preseason. His value also extends beyond catching passes. Fields embraces the physical side of the position as a run blocker, an attribute that should benefit backs like Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Cam Skattebo when they reach the second level. Even on plays where he isn't targeted, his ability to sustain blocks could make him an important contributor.

Overall, Fields showed he has the tools to climb the Giants' depth chart. His long-term ceiling will depend on whether he can consistently create separation and continue refining his route running. His contested-catch ability will generate the highlight plays, but carving out a dependable role within the offense will ultimately determine just how impactful he becomes. If his preseason debut was any indication, the Giants may have found much more than a third-round receiver.
