Have the New York Giants drafted their quarterback of the future with the selection of Jaxson Dart with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft? One NFL analyst believes he is a perfect fit for the Big Blue.
After signing both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in the offseason, the idea of the Giants taking a quarterback in the first round was up in the air. Well, they didn’t…at least with their No. 3 overall pick.
The Giants had themselves a great first day of the draft by selecting Abdul Carter at No. 3 and trading back into the first round to take Dart, who emerged as the second quarterback taken off the board as Shedeur Sanders fell all the way to a Day 3 pick. Did the Giants pull off a chess move with the selection?
Jaxson Dart fits the mold of what the Giants like in a QB
Given what they thought they had in Daniel Jones and the team’s high interest in Drake May in the 2024 NFL Draft, Dart appears to fit the bill of what head coach Brian Daboll likes in a quarterback. In his analysis, NFL.Com’s Bucky Brooks believes Daboll’s past work with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen makes Dart the perfect young QB for the Giants.
Brooks writes:
“Considering Brian Daboll's past work with Josh Allen in Buffalo, it is easy to see why the coach handpicked the Ole Miss standout as his future franchise quarterback in New York, trading back into the first round to make Dart the second signal-caller off the board. Though the 6-foot-2, 223-pound passer obviously isn't a carbon copy of the league's reigning Most Valuable Player, he possesses the dual-threat skills to make Big Blue's offense pop with RPOs, designed quarterback runs and deep shots featured prominently on the call sheet.”
The size, the talent and his mental makeup makes Dart an intriguing young quarterback. What makes him perfect for Daboll and company is that he can sit and learn behind a veteran like Wilson with no pressure for him to step in Year 1. Once he gets his opportunity, he will have quite the weapon in Malik Nabers to get the ball to, which gives Giants fans an interesting QB-WR duo to watch beyond 2025, if not at some point in 2025 depending how the season goes.
In all, it is hard to disagree with Brooks’ that the former Ole Miss star is a perfect player fit for the Giants. Again, he has that prototypical quarterback style along with the athleticism to make plays in and outside the pocket. He will need time to develop more consistency with his arm angles when throwing the ball and improve on his post-snap read, but that’s what makes learning behind Wilson an ideal situation for the new Giants rookie signal-caller.
