One month of the NFL and fantasy football season is now behind us! Injuries are becoming a major factor in lineup decisions for real-life NFL coaches and fantasy managers alike.

Injuries can stall development and limit workloads for some rookies while creating opportunities for others.

Carnell Tate is starting to become a reliable fantasy option, while Jeremiyah Love's injury and uncertain workload are raising some concerns. With injuries creating opportunities for some rookies and limiting others, there are a few tough lineup decisions to make heading into Week 5.

In this week's NFL Fantasy Football Rookie Start ’Em, Sit ’Em, we'll walk you through the news and analysis to help you set your Week 5 lineups.

NFL fantasy football rookie starts for Week 5

Start 'Em: Carnell Tate

The matchup: The Tennessee Titans are facing the Houston Texans in Week 5. Normally, Houston would be a team to avoid in any sort of matchup, but so far this season, the Texans are allowing the most points to wide receivers in fantasy and rank 26th in the league in scoring defense.

Why I'm starting him: Carnell Tate is approaching auto-start territory as Tennessee's top target. Last week, he had season highs in receptions, yards, and targets. He hasn't scored a touchdown yet in 2026, so he feels due for a score against Houston.

Tate is the Titans' leader in targets and first downs, so they have no problem going to him throughout the game. The fourth-overall pick continues to be effective in multiple ways. Just like in his time in college, Tate is a deep threat (33-yard reception on fourth down last week) and a favorite option in key situations (four of 12 targets last week on third or fourth down).

Houston hasn't had the same suffocating secondary play this year with the addition of Reed Blankenship at safety. This combination of factors makes Tate a clear start this week in your lineup.

Fantasy Outlook: WR3/FLEX

Start 'Em: Denzel Boston

The matchup: The Cleveland Browns are facing the New York Jets in Week 5. While New York is in the bottom 10 in points allowed to wide receivers, they've struggled recently, allowing 250 and 260 yards through the air in their last two games.

Why I'm starting him: Boston has been the most consistent rookie in fantasy football this season. He leads all first-year players in fantasy points and receiving yards and is tied for first in touchdowns. Despite increased production from Harold Fannin and KC Concepcion over the last two weeks, Boston has remained the team's top target and a productive fantasy and real-life option.

One month into the season, and it's clear that Boston belongs. His size, body control, and strong hands have translated to the NFL level with ease, and Cleveland's offense has been much better than expected (16th in passing offense DVOA).

The most impressive thing about Boston this season is how he's winning. On his 13 receptions, he's run just about every route you can ask for: go routes, stop routes, digs, slants, out routes, and more. Head coach Todd Monken can ask Boston to do several different things, and the rookie is still effective. That will keep Boston involved and keep defenses guessing.

Fantasy Outlook: WR2

Start 'Em: Antonio Williams

The matchup: The Washington Commanders are facing the New York Giants in an NFC East matchup in Week 5. New York has been an average passing defense when you look at all of the statistics, but the key stat I'm looking at is touchdowns. They've allowed nine passing touchdowns this season, tied for third in the league.

Why I'm starting him: Williams played a season-high 69 percent of offensive snaps last week with Terry McLaurin sidelined. McLaurin does not have an estimated timetable to return after tweaking his hamstring last week, and he was held out of Wednesday's practice.

The Commanders could also see the return of starting quarterback Jayden Daniels on Sunday. Daniels left the Week 2 game against the Cowboys with a dislocated elbow, but head coach Dan Quinn expressed optimism going into the week of practice, and Daniels was a full participant in practice on Wednesday.

Williams had his best production of the season with Daniels at quarterback in Week 1 when he had season highs in receptions and yards, as well as his lone touchdown of the year.

You'll have to double-check the injury report to confirm that Daniels is playing and McLaurin isn't, but if those expectations hold, Williams is a start this week.

Fantasy Outlook: FLEX

NFL fantasy football rookie sits for Week 5

Sit 'Em: Jeremiyah Love

The matchup: The Arizona Cardinals are facing the Detroit Lions in Week 5. Despite being a poor overall defense, Detroit is just an average fantasy matchup against running backs because the game always turns into a shootout. Teams aren't running as much or going to their backs because they need points in bunches to keep up with the Lions' offense.

Why I'm sitting him: Just one week after being a recommended start, Jeremiyah Love has become one of the riskier rookie options heading into Week 5.

A lot is going on with Love this week. First, he injured his ankle in last week's game against the New York Giants. Then he and head coach Mike LaFleur both had comments about keeping Love's utilization low to keep him fresh and help with the rookie learning curve.

Here's what LaFleur had to say about a few decisions to use Tyler Allgeier instead of Love:

Love also addressed his reps and workload:

Vibes are feeling a little low after three straight losses and a second ankle injury this season for Love. If you can, put Love back on your bench this week for what will likely be a pass-heavy matchup against Detroit.

The talent is still there, but until there's more clarity on his health and workload, Love is a difficult player to trust in a starting lineup.

Fantasy Outlook: Bench/stash

Sit Em: Dohnte Meyers

The matchup: The Cincinnati Bengals are facing off against the Miami Dolphins this week. Miami is actually the third-toughest opponent for wide receivers in fantasy so far in 2026 because teams simply don't need to go through the air much to beat them.

Why I'm sitting him: Dohnte Meyers is a great story, and he had a great week last week when Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both left the game early, but he is a big risk to put in your lineup in Week 5.

Meyers has taken over the slot receiver work with Andrei Iosivas injured, so he's at least seeing the field on offense, but he took over outside reps against the Jaguars after the injuries started piling up. It's unclear at this time what his role will be this week.

First, there's a chance Chase and Higgins both play in Week 5. Chase is in concussion protocol, which makes his availability uncertain, and Higgins is considered day-to-day.

But even if both are out, there's no way to know what head coach Zac Taylor's plan would be without his two stars and a week to prepare. The passing game could be completely funneled through Mike Gesicki and Chase Brown instead of going to receivers. That's a hard pivot to make in-game when there are injuries, but easier to do at practice during the week.

Hopefully, Meyers continues to get chances and grow as a player. But with too much up in the air this week, it's best to try to claim him off waivers and stash him on your bench.

Fantasy Outlook: Bench/stash

Sit Em: Makai Lemon

The matchup: The Philadelphia Eagles are facing the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. Jacksonville, on paper, is a favorable matchup for receivers. They are allowing the second-most passing yards in the NFL and the 11th-most fantasy points to wide receivers.

Why I'm sitting him: Things are pointing in favor of Makai Lemon being a potential play this week. Not only are the Jaguars a favorable matchup, but Lemon is coming off of his most productive game of the season.

Last week against the Rams, Lemon had season highs in snaps played, yards, and targets. All of this happened with DeVonta Smith out with a hamstring injury. And Smith is still on the injury report after not practicing on Wednesday.

But things are a mess in Philadelphia. Lane Johnson retired, Cam Jurgens was traded away, Saquon Barkley is now questionable with an injury, and backup running back Tank Bigsby is now on IR. The offense is in a real state of flux going into Week 5.

Meanwhile, despite being the team's "WR3" through the first three games of the season, Lemon was passed on the depth chart with Smith out. Darius Cooper outsnapped Lemon 55-45 against the Rams as more of an outside receiver option than Lemon, who is mostly playing in the slot.

While things on paper seem favorable for Lemon this week in fantasy football, the way the Eagles' offense looks and deploys him on the field suggests he's not quite ready to be a fantasy option.

Fantasy Outlook: Bench/stash

Rookie sleeper of the week: Malachi Fields

The matchup: Going back to this NFC East game, the New York Giants are facing the Washington Commanders in Week 5. Washington is giving up the fifth-most fantasy points to wide receivers this season. The team is still without last year's second-round pick at cornerback, Trey Amos, and long-time special teams captain, Jeremy Reaves, has been starting at safety.

Why he's my sleeper: This is maybe my simplest and silliest analysis of the season, but Malachi Fields is REALLY tall. And the Washington cornerbacks are REALLY short.

Amik Robertson and Mike Sainristil are the starting outside corners for the Commanders, and they measured in at 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-9½, respectively, at the combine. Fields, meanwhile, measured in at 6-foot-4½.

All it takes is one play in the red zone with Fields matched up on the outside with one of those corners, and he gets an easy lob for a touchdown - making him a decent FLEX option for the week.

Fields also has all of the standard things going for him in fantasy football. He's coming off his best game in terms of fantasy points and yards, scored his first touchdown of the season last week, and is seeing plenty of playing time as New York's second receiver in snaps.

There's a chance Fields gets a lot of work from quarterback Jameis Winston in this game after last week's touchdown and the clear size advantage. But even if he has one catch for one target, if it's a touchdown on a jump ball, that's a win for a sneaky FLEX play this week.
