The NFC South came down to the final game of the 2025 regular season, with the Carolina Panthers ultimately taking home the division crown with an 8-9 record. Will the division come down to the wire once again in 2026?
If it does, the 2026 rookie class could be the difference in a division filled with question marks.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter the season looking like the most complete team in the division, but even they have questions to answer after losing two longtime stars. Mike Evans departed in free agency, while defensive leader Lavonte David called it a career following the 2025 season. The Buccaneers addressed both areas in the draft, including using their first pick on Rueben Bain Jr.
As for the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints, each enters the season with questions at quarterback. But as we continue looking at the most important rookies across the NFL, did these teams select the right players in the 2026 NFL Draft to strengthen other areas of their rosters and remain competitive in what should once again be a wide-open NFC South?
Which rookies could make the biggest impact in the NFC South?
Atlanta Falcons: Jack Strand, QB, Minnesota State University Moorhead (Undrafted)
The Falcons have a few actual draft picks who could claim the title of most important rookie, but it is an undrafted quarterback from a Division II school most Falcons or NFL fans had never heard of who could ultimately save their season.
As an NFL Mocks favorite prior to the 2026 NFL Draft, Jack Strand going undrafted wasn’t a big surprise. The surprise is that he could be under center as the starter for the Falcons sooner rather than later.
That comes after a breakout preseason in which he completed 24-of-36 passes for 305 yards. He had the offense moving and gave head coach Kevin Stefanski something to consider with both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa nursing injuries.
While Tagovailoa was named the starter for Week 1, an oblique injury led to Stefanski turning to Cooper Rush over Strand as the Week 1 signal caller. Going into the season as the QB2, Strand is an injury to Rush or poor play away from seeing regular-season action.
His readiness is what makes him the most important rookie for the Falcons. How he performs if called upon could keep Atlanta above water until either Penix Jr. or Tagovailoa returns.
Unless, of course, Strand takes hold of the role and makes it difficult for Stefanski to take it away from him.
Carolina Panthers: Lee Hunter, DT, Texas Tech (No. 49 overall)
The Panthers selected Monroe Freeling with their top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, but the most important rookie will be second-round pick Lee Hunter.
Yes, Freeling’s addition to the offensive line will help the offense, but Hunter is the player who could make a more impactful contribution in Year 1 along the defensive line. As a prospect who started to get major attention leading up to the draft, Hunter is an elite run stopper who could allow Derrick Brown to become more of a primary pass rusher on defense.
Along with his physicality and high motor, Hunter and his 6-foot-3, 318-pound frame will give the Panthers an anchor in the middle of a defense looking for identity and presence. His ability to consistently impact the run game will be important, but so will the opportunities he creates for Brown to capitalize as an interior pass rusher playing next to him.
That combination could make Hunter one of the more impactful rookies on the Panthers’ defense in 2026.
New Orleans Saints: Jordyn Tyson, WR, Arizona State (No. 8 overall)
Here is a situation where the most important rookie won’t make an impact right away. In fact, Saints fans will have to wait for top pick Jordyn Tyson to make his NFL debut.
Selected with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Tyson was placed on injured reserve and will miss at least the first four games of his rookie season due to a right hamstring strain. Prior to the injury, Tyson was impressive in camp and should serve as another top-tier weapon opposite Chris Olave.
While the Saints still have Olave, what makes Tyson the most important rookie once he returns is his ability to become that second option for second-year quarterback Tyler Shough. Although the hamstring strain adds to the durability concerns Tyson carried into the draft, he is a high-reward player who could give the Saints a dynamic duo at wide receiver once he gets back on the field and finds his role within the offense.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Rueben Bain Jr., EDGE, Miami (No. 15 overall)
A player with top-10 talent slid right into the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Entering the league already with a chip on his shoulder due to criticism over his arm length, Rueben Bain Jr. will have extra motivation after sliding out of the top 10.
As a high-impact pass rusher at Miami, Bain was lethal off the edge with his explosiveness and technique. He will bring that energy to a Buccaneers team that entered the draft with edge rusher as one of its primary needs. Tampa Bay is also looking for star power on the defensive side of the ball, especially following the retirement of longtime linebacker Lavonte David.
Can Bain take on that role and become the next star of the Buccaneers' defense? We know he has the talent, but how far can defensive mastermind Todd Bowles take it?
While Bain’s importance speaks for itself, what makes him even more important is the uncertainty at quarterback for the other three teams in the division. If Bain lives up to his potential, he can become a difference-maker on a Buccaneers defense that sets them apart in what projects to be another tight NFC South race.
The NFC South might not have a clear favorite entering 2026, but that is what makes the impact of these rookies even more important. From first-round talents expected to make an immediate impact to Tyson having to wait for his opportunity, each could eventually play a role in deciding which team comes out on top.
