There are high expectations ahead for 2026 NFL Draft No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza in a Las Vegas Raiders uniform.  After leading the Indiana Hoosiers to a national championship, those expectations are valid especially with what he brings to the team from a cerebral perspective.

Raiders coaches already see one strength separating Fernando Mendoza

At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, Mendoza not only has the prototypical size of a quarterback, but he is also a very accurate intermediate passer who processes the game pre- and post-snap at an elite level.

Those two skillsets alone motivate one bold prediction for the top pick in the draft in Year 1.  Once he learns the offense, sky is the limit for the first-year quarterback as he leans on those attributes.  So far in organized team activities, he has impressed offensive coaches with how locked in he is on understanding the offensive scheme which shows he’s a quarterback out to learn and grow at the cerebral level as well as excelling at the physical aspects he possesses as well.

"He's somebody that wants to know the whys of everything, the story behind everything," first-time offensive coordinator Andrew Janocko said of Mendoza, via the team's official website. "What we're calling, but why are we calling it?

"He's really just a sponge that wants to know everything. So it's a lot of fun working with a quarterback like that because he's coming in as a blank slate in this offense -- never been in this offense before -- and just asking a ton of questions."

The challenge for Mendoza is transforming into the driver of this new offense he is learning.  With the questions he is asking to really understand the what’s and why’s of the offense, the easy prediction here is he will adapt mentally.  But, what about the speed of the game?  How well will he adjust.  Most importantly, how quickly will he adjust?

Looking into the crystal ball that is the 2026 NFL season, Mendoza will live up to the hype in one specific way.

The addition of Kirk Cousins will push Mendoza in the best way possible, but unless he struggles and shows he’s not ready, he should be under center for the Raiders to start the 2026 NFL season.  That is not the bold prediction here, although it shouldn’t shock anyone if it is Cousins who starts the season.

Why Fernando Mendoza’s intermediate passing could dominate immediately

The bold prediction is the success he will have as an intermediate passer in the Raiders’ offense. With tight end Brock Bowers as his primary target and Ashton Jeanty lining up behind him, Mendoza will have two short-to-intermediate targets with the ability to create yards after the catch.  That was much of Mendoza’s success at Indiana as he had Omar Cooper Jr. and possession receiver Elijah Sarratt making tough plays in the passing game and then creating after the catch.

Along with Bowers, Mendoza will have a wide receiver group led by Tre Tucker and Jalen Nailor who should help elevate his intermediate strength.  The speed of those receivers will also help Mendoza catch defenses off guard with the deep ball, but where he could dominate is getting the ball out quickly and letting his playmakers generate yardage.

In a rookie season that will rival Jayden Daniels as far as passing yards, Mendoza will throw for over 3,500 yards and come close to challenging the rookie completion percentage of 70.4% set by Jake Browning in 2023.  This will be due to the intermediate passing game the mental processing in knowing when to take what is given to him.

Oh, and he will be an offensive rookie of the year favorite as well.
