Following Cam Skattebo's epic performance in the Peach Bowl against Texas this past January in the College Football Playoff, we wrote about the intriguing draft prospects for the Arizona State running back.
It wasn't easy to nail down a comp for Skattebo, andafter being selected by the New York Giants in the fourth round (No. 105 overall), he is proving himself and everyone else right that he is just, simply, Skattebo—one of a kind.
"Who is Skattebo's NFL comp? In his own words, he said, "I like to say myself." And truer words have never been spoken. In my 30+ years of watching football (plus NFL Films), I've never seen a back exactly like Skattebo. He later added that he has been influenced by the likes of Christian McCaffrey, Marshawn Lynch, Mark Ingram and Le'Veon Bell, and you can see that. I see a blend of McCaffrey, Mike Alstott and Jerome Bettis. The man is not easy to tackle, to say the least. And once he gets a full head of steam, good luck catching him/bringing him down."
Cam Skattebo has forced 31 missed tackles since Week 3, per Next Gen Stats.

Only Christian McCaffrey has forced more missed tackles over that time period (37).

Taking advantage of his opportunity
Skattebo was limited in the preseason with a hamstring injury and entered the season with an uncertain role in a running back rotation featuring Tyrone Tracy, Jr., and Devin Singletary. That quickly changed in week three when Tracy dislocated his shoulder in a matchup with Kansas City in primetime. Skattebo was thrust into the RB1 role, finishing that game with 60 yards rushing, a touchdown, and another 61 yards receiving.
Skattebo has not looked back, starting the next four games and recording 398 yards rushing on the season with five touchdowns. He has another 189 yards receiving and a touchdown. In a draft class loaded with running backs, Skattebo ranks third among rookies in rushing and leads all rookie running backs in receiving yards. Skattebo is rated third by PFF thus far among all running backs, not just rookies.
Skattebo's performance, playing style, and how he carries himself on and off the field have endeared him to New York Giants fans and NFL fans in general. He's even made his mark in Fantasy Football, ranking as RB8 thus far by Sleeper.
In January, we said, "One lucky NFL team is going to catch him this upcoming April, and whether that be in the first or the fourth round, Skattebo will become a fan favorite for his new team." It couldn't have been more spot-on, but one thing about that statement is for certain: NFL teams are kicking themselves for letting Skattebo fall to the fourth round. However, the New York Giants and their fans could not be more pleased.
"The way he plays is so blue collar it sings to so much of what New York prides itself in."@PSchrags on the impact Cam Skattebo has already made in New York 💪 🗽 pic.twitter.com/Biye1nfu2i
