With no supplemental draft in 2026, Brendan Sorsby's path to the NFL just got tougher.

The seemingly never-ending Brendan Sorsby saga took a turn for the worse, at least if you're Sorsby, when the NFL announced it would not hold a supplemental draft in 2026.

Brendan Sorsby still has traits NFL teams will value

What does this mean for Sorsby? Simply put, he can't play at Texas Tech (or any college), and he won't be playing in the NFL in 2026. That leaves him with the task of staying in football shape and making himself an attractive prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft.

There are several quarterback-needy teams, many of which opted not to select a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. Arizona drafted Carson Beck, but not until the third round. The New York Jets opted to bring in Geno Smith. The Miami Dolphins, who gave Quinn Ewers an opportunity in 2026, signed Malik Willis from Green Bay. The Cleveland Browns appear to be giving Shedeur Sanders a chance, but they continue to have the most polarizing quarterback room in the league.

Had the supplemental draft happened, I would have called the Jets the most likely landing spot for Sorsby with a second-round pick. However, today's ruling changes things quite a bit. Not only will Sorsby be out of action for an entire year, out of sight, out of mind, he also now enters what many are calling a loaded quarterback draft class.

There are still a lot of unknowns surrounding the 2027 quarterback crop, but that's the thing: Sorsby won't have the opportunity to improve his stock. While players such as Arch Manning, Dante Moore, Drew Mestemaker, Sam Leavitt, John Mateer and CJ Carr continue to build their résumés, Sorsby will have to rely on his past work and mixed record while hoping a team is willing to take a chance on him.

What does Sorsby bring to the table? Between stops at Indiana and Cincinnati, he's thrown for 7,208 yards, 60 touchdowns and just 18 interceptions. He's also added 1,305 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground. In his best season, 2025 at Cincinnati, he passed for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and just five interceptions while rushing for 580 yards and nine scores. That's hardly anything to sneeze at, but I just don't know how it will hold up with him missing the entirety of the 2026 season.

To me, he slips from a potential second-round supplemental selection to a late-round pick or even an undrafted free agent in 2027. He goes from potentially being viewed as a long-term starter to simply trying to find a spot as the heir apparent to an established quarterback whenever that opportunity arises.

Why the Cowboys make sense as Brendan Sorsby's landing spot

As of today, my prediction for Sorsby's landing spot in 2027 is the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round. It's Dak Prescott's team, but behind him, Joe Milton III and Sam Howell are hardly locks to remain long-term options. Sorsby, a product of Lake Dallas High School who was born and raised in Texas, could land with his hometown team and develop into a solid backup, and perhaps a future starter in Dallas once the post-Dak era begins.

Tuesday, June 23, 2026, could prove to be the day that changed Brendan Sorsby's career. How will he bounce back? We'll have to wait almost a year to find out.
