One of the biggest disappointments of Week 5 in the NFL season was the Chicago Bears, who looked completely outmatched in their loss to the Green Bay Packers. While Chicago has several issues to address, its defensive collapse exposed one problem that could significantly impact the team's approach to the 2027 NFL Draft.

Jordan Love looked nearly unstoppable against Chicago, completing a season-high 81 percent of his passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers could have been even more impressive had the game remained competitive. Beyond allowing Love to consistently complete passes, the Bears also struggled to prevent explosive plays. Chicago surrendered four completions of more than 40 yards, the most by Chicago in at least 25 years.

The performance only reinforced the need for Chicago to evaluate its cornerback room this offseason. Fortunately, the 2027 NFL Draft offers several intriguing prospects, including one first-round talent who could be an ideal fit for the Bears.

Chicago Bears face major questions at cornerback

The biggest concern has been the play of Jaylon Johnson, who has allowed 78 percent of the passes thrown his way to be completed this season. At the other outside cornerback spot, Tyrique Stevenson has struggled with consistency and is scheduled to become a free agent after the season.

Then there is Kyler Gordon, whose availability has become a major concern. Gordon has appeared in just three games since the start of the 2025 season, leaving Chicago with another significant question mark in its secondary.

Taken together, these issues make it difficult to envision the Bears entering next season without making a meaningful investment at cornerback. Whether through free agency or the draft, Chicago needs more dependable options at the position.

Fortunately for the Bears, the 2027 NFL Draft appears to offer several intriguing cornerback prospects. I currently have first-round grades on four cornerbacks, and one stands out as a particularly strong fit for Chicago: Clemson's Ashton Hampton.

Ashton Hampton could be the answer for Chicago

Hampton currently ranks No. 2 on my cornerback board and would bring an impressive combination of ball skills, physicality, and playmaking ability to the Bears' secondary.

He leads all of college football with nine pass breakups this season after recording another 11 in 2025. Hampton has demonstrated an ability to break quickly on the ball and disrupt passing windows, making him a difficult matchup for opposing receivers.

At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Hampton also brings the physical presence Chicago needs at cornerback. He is not afraid to challenge receivers at the catch point, and that aggressive style has helped him limit opponents to a completion rate of just 38 percent on passes thrown his way this season.

Those traits could make Hampton an ideal addition to a Bears secondary that struggled to contain Green Bay's passing attack. Chicago needs a cornerback who can play with confidence, compete physically against top receivers, and consistently make plays on the football. Hampton has shown the potential to provide all three.

There is also a realistic path for the Bears to consider him in the first round. According to NFL Mock Draft Database, Hampton currently carries a consensus ranking of 16th overall in the 2027 NFL Draft, potentially putting him within reach of Chicago depending on where the team selects.

The Bears have several issues to address as they look to build a more complete roster, particularly when it comes to generating pressure on opposing quarterbacks. However, the performance against Green Bay demonstrated that the secondary cannot be overlooked. Johnson's struggles, Stevenson's uncertain future, and Gordon's availability concerns have created too many questions at cornerback.

Chicago doesn't necessarily need to use its first-round pick on a cornerback, but Hampton would be difficult to pass up if he's available. His combination of size, physicality, and ball skills could give the Bears a long-term answer at the position. After watching Green Bay repeatedly exploit their secondary, Chicago has plenty of reasons to make cornerback a priority in the 2027 NFL Draft.
