A blockbuster trade and key free agency signings has AFC East teams facing some key decisions in the 2026 NFL Draft.
While the New York Jets have been wheeling and dealing via trade and a free agency spending spree, the Miami Dolphins have been making noise by completely overturning their roster.  If releasing players like Tua Tagovailoa and Bradley Chubb wasn’t enough, the Dolphins blew the lid off the NFL by trading top wide receiver Jayden Waddle to the Denver Broncos.
In a trade that seemingly came out of nowhere, the Dolphins obtained an additional first round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft along with a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick. As a team that looks to be rebuilding their roster, the additional draft capital should help the process.
Dolphins facing a big decision at No. 11
As far as how the trade impacts the Dolphins in the first round, they can now shift their focus at No. 11 to finding an offensive weapon who can replace Waddle. Is Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson that player?
Projected as one of the top wide receivers in the draft, Tyson has star potential when healthy. He’s a big receiver who can work the boundaries and create after the catch just like Waddle, but there is a risk due to his durability. Should the Dolphins go with a sure bet at No. 11 like drafting a top cornerback or perhaps taking Kenyon Sadiq who is the top tight end in the draft?
With the two picks, the Dolphins could package No. 30 and No. 11 to move up in the draft to select a blue ship prospect if they feel there is a player in the top 10 who adds instant star power.
After signing Malik Willis as the starting QB, one of the picks must be an offensive playmaker. Whether its Tyson, Sadiq or something selected at No. 30, the Dolphins must add some punch to the offense beyond Malik Washington, Tutu Atwell, Tahj Washington and Jalen Tolbert.
Jets facing a QB decision at No. 16?
Unless the Las Vegas Raiders shock the world by passing on Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick, the Jets pick at No. 2 will come down to Ohio State’s Arvell Reese, Miami’s Rueben Bain and Texas Tech’s David Bailey. So, the intrigue comes at No.16 and the potential at quarterback that is Ty Simpson.
After trading for Geno Smith, it is certain the Jets will take a QB (or two) in this draft. Is Simpson the answer as high at 16?Â

With the two first rounders and two second round picks, the Jets can afford to take a shot at the former Alabama quarterback, or they could wait till Day 2 where there are three QBs who once where projected as top QB prospects. Whether its Garrett Nussmeier, Drew Allar or Carson Beck, the Jets will have to believe either of them would be a better long-term fit than Simpson.
They may have no choice if another team drafting ahead of them falls in love with Simpson. Could that force them to take them at No. 2?
Patriots must prepare for life without A.J. Brown
Until A.J. Brown is traded by the Philadelphia Eagles, he will be linked to the New England Patriots as their potential No. 1 receiver.Â
Although the team signed Romeo Doubs in free agency, there is still the idea that they will eventually acquire the disgruntled Eagles star. If that does happen prior to the draft, the Patriots will likely be without their first-round pick in 2026. With the possibility of a trade coming after the draft, the team could use the No. 31 overall pick on a player of need and then use future picks on obtaining Brown (which seems like the more likely path).
If that is the gameplan, the Patriots must hit on whoever they take at No. 31. With the top need being at pass rush, defenders who could and should be in that range are Oklahoma’s R. Mason Thomas, Missouri’s Zion Young and Clemson’s T.J. Parker. Any of those three players would add speed and a consistent pass rush element to the Patriots’ defense.

Other positions the Patriots could target at No. 31 is help on the offensive line where players like Blake Miller, Max Iheanachor and Kadyn Proctor could be at play at right tackle, or they could find a wide receiver of interest if a big wide receiver like Denzel Boston is still on the board.Â
That could simmer the Brown rumors.
Bills also looking to gain an edge
The Bills got Josh Allen a weapon in D.J. Moore, but the question is are they done adding to the offensive weaponry of the star QB?
If they do, a player like KC Concepcion could sway them away from taking a pass rusher at No. 26. That should be their top need after losing A.J. Epenesa in free agency. Along with linebacker, the Bills have great needs to fill at edge rusher (even with the signing of Bradley Chubb) and should value one of those two positions with their top pick.
Players to watch are T.J. Parker, Miami’s Ahkeem Mesidor and Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell at edge and Georgia’s CJ Allen at linebacker. Unless they are overwhelmed with the opportunity to add Concepcion, the Bills should be locked in on a prospect with the talent to be a high-level defender, especially if they want to regain their status as the team to beat in the AFC East.
