Could there be a third tight end taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft?
According to one NFL Mock draft, the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles create a high-caliber tight end duo by selecting LSU tight end Mason Taylor with the No. 32 overall pick in the draft.
In what is a deep draft class led by Penn State’s Tyler Warren and Michigan’s Colston Loveland, the depth in talent at the tight end position is expected to be filled with Day 2 and Day 3 talent. Taylor, who has been emerging as a top 5 tight end in this draft. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end has been a consistent contributor in LSU’s offense during his three seasons but really emerged in 2024 with 55 receptions for 546 yards.
While his combination of size and athleticism are the most attractive aspect of his skillset, his reliability in clutch situations is what will really stand out on film for teams looking to upgrade at the tight end position.
Could one of those teams be the Eagles who rumors suggest could be moving on from Dallas Goedert?
2025 NFL Mock Draft: CBS writer projects Eagles will repeat history by selecting Mason Taylor
With the Eagles biggest needs coming at the defensive side of the football, the team could also look to build an even more dynamic offense around Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts. Could a two-tight end set be in the repertoire of the Eagles in 2025 or is Taylor a potential replacement for Goedert?
According to CBS writer Josh Edwards, the Eagles make noise at the end of the first round by selecting Taylor.
He writes:
“Dallas Goedert has been the topic of trade discussions. The situation is similar to when Philadelphia had Zach Ertz and drafted Goedert in the second round. Mason Taylor, the son of NFL legend Jason Taylor, is brought in as the heir apparent at tight end.”
Considering the depth of tight end talent, the Eagles don’t need to select a player at No. 32. They could wait until late Day 2 or Day 3 to take a player like Taylor or a pass-catching tight end like Harold Fannin Jr. or Elijah Arroyo. In that respect, NFL Mocks disagrees with Edwards and instead has the Eagles using their first-round pick on a defensive lineman like Oregon product Derrick Harmon.
Obviously, tight end would become a bigger need if the team part ways with Goedert, but there is plenty of talent at the position in this daft where the Eagles won’t have to reach for one. Love the player and what Taylor brings to the table, but he may just fall in their laps late in the second round. If not there, there are other potential replacements for Goedert or potential complements to the veteran tight end star.
