AFC East Buzz: Bradley Chubb, Patriots rookie hype, Bills-Jets #MNF
The AFC East is going to be a fun division in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers is set to make his regular season debut with the New York Jets on Monday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills in a Week 1 showdown, the New England Patriots are gearing up for some rookie excitement in 2023 and Bradley Chubb leads a dangerous Miami Dolphins defense.
Let’s start down in South Beach where the Dolphins’ offense is getting all the hype, but don’t sleep on that defense. In the offseason, Miami pulled off a trade with the Los Angeles Rams that brought Jalen Ramsey to the Dolphins to pair with Xavien Howard in their secondary. But an injury to Ramsey will have him out till at least early December.
Still, the secondary should be okay until Ramsey returns. What really makes the Dolphins a dangerous defense is upfront where players like Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb lead a front seven that should cause some havoc with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio calling plays.
Beasts of the AFC East: Bradley Chubb leads a dangerous Dolphins front seven
Speaking of Chubb, the two-time Pro Bowler is hyped about what Fangio brings to the table. During an appearance on The Jim Rome Show, the Dolphins pass rusher talked about the fun the defense is set to have in 2023.
"“I feel like the defense in itself is very simple to learn,” Chubb said, as transcribed by NFL.com. “But just the way we disguise different coverages, the way we play off the edge. I feel like it’s very unique, and it’s one of those defenses that once you’re in it, you don’t really want to play another form of defense. Especially the guys on the edge getting a chance to fly around and cause havoc and getting to the backfield as much as you possibly can. It’s gonna be fun.”"
In his second full season with the Dolphins, Chubb is hoping to make the defense his own. With just 2.5 sacks in 2022, he really needs to emerge as a defensive leader in that front seven, especially with the offenses they will be facing in the AFC East. The Bills with Josh Allen, the Jets with Aaron Rodgers and a Patriots team that could surprise some folks if Mac Jones takes a step forward under the play calling of Bill O’Brien.
That leads us to the Patriots, who also have some high expectations of their 2023 NFL Draft class.
