NFC South rumors: Saints add linebacker Jaylon Smith
The New Orleans Saints added a former Pro Bowl linebacker to the defense with the signing of 2019 Pro Bowler Jaylon Smith.
In all a smart move for the Saints as Smith should excel as the team’s third linebacker once everyone is healthy.
After a strong start to his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, Smith has become a bit of a journey man in the NFL the last two seasons. After a stint with the Packers, Smith landed on the New York Giants practice squad. He eventually played his way on the 53-man roster and had a solid season with the Giants in 2021.
In 11 games, Smith racked up 88 tackles with one sack and one fumble recovery. With Demario Davis nursing a calf injury, Smith will have an opportunity to show the Saints he can be a contributor and perhaps play his way up to second on the depth chart behind Davis once he returns.
During his Pro Bowl season in 2019, Jaylon Smith became a star at the middle linebacker position with a total of 142 tackles with 2.5 sacks and 3 QB hits. A good move for the Saints in their hopes to take the NFC South.
