Scenario 2: Miami Dolphins trade for a quarterback

Just because the Dolphins weren’t able to finalize a trade that would’ve sent Tagovailoa to Washington before the deadline doesn’t mean that those talks are permanently off the table. The rumored deal that was reported from several sources was a three-team deal between Miami, Houston, and Washington that would’ve sent Deshaun Watson to the Dolphins, a flurry of draft picks to Houston, and Tagovailoa to the Football Team.

By all accounts, the Miami Dolphins were interested in the deal, but the uncertainty surrounding Watson’s legal situation was enough for them to wait. Now that the trade deadline has passed, Watson and his team are no longer under pressure to reach settlements in a short period of time and the legal process can carry out without any time strains.

Watson has remained adamant that he wants out of Houston, and that is unlikely to change regardless of what happens over the course of this offseason. Both sides seem to have a mutual interest in making this deal work, and Miami has the assets to acquire a player of Watson’s caliber.

What does Deshaun Watson bring to the Dolphins?

Looking at this strictly from a football standpoint, Watson would be an upgrade at quarterback. He’s still in his mid-twenties and has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in football when he is on the field. He also showed throughout the 2020 season that he is capable of thriving in an imperfect situation and doesn’t need an elite offensive line or receiving core to put up numbers. The question the Dolphins would have to ask themselves is if the talent outweighs the baggage and controversy.
