Chicago Bears: Justin Fields Plays Best Game So Far vs. 49ers
Chicago Bears rookie QB Justin Fields found some rhythm and showed up big time against the 49ers.
It wasn’t the outcome the Chicago Bears wanted on Sunday, as they fell at home to the San Francisco 49ers 33-22. They stayed competitive till the very end, and showed some promise for the future. Rookie quarterback Justin Fields played extremely well in this game, and showed why the Bears moved up nine spots to draft him.
It was fair after the 2021 draft concluded that to say that Fields didn’t inherit a great situation. Matt Nagy has struggled as the head coach and as a play caller, and the offense around Fields isn’t great, especially the offensive line. Despite the turnovers, Fields hasn’t played as poorly as many would say so far this year. He doesn’t have a lot of time to throw and there have been some drops.
Things looked different on Sunday against the 49ers. Fields was given ample time to make plays, and he flashed the howitzer on multiple occasions to every level of the field. He maneuvered the pocket very well and kept his eyes downfield. His first touchdown was an excellent throw moving to his left, where he gave only Jessie James a chance to make the play in the end zone with fantastic ball placement. Fields also reminded everyone how elite of an athlete he is, picking up big time yardage on the ground, including a remarkable touchdown run when he reversed field.
Yes, he threw a pick late, but it was on a throw that challenged the defense deep down the field when they needed a big play late. That turnover shouldn’t take away from what was a very good game.
Justin Fields is the future of this franchise and will be very good down the road. His performance against a defense that has great rushers and pressures constantly proves how cool he can be under pressure and how talented he is in both facets of the game.
