Javonte Williams continues to thrive in the Denver Broncos offense
Despite a tough loss to the Browns, Javonte Williams is proving he can handle more and more in the Denver Broncos offense.
The Denver Broncos aren’t trending in the right direction, now having lost four games in a row. It’s been a tough stretch with inconsistent play on both sides of the ball, starting at the quarterback position and ending with injuries on their defensive front. The good news is that all news isn’t negative, as rookie running back Javonte Williams played well in the defeat.
Williams has been making the most of his timeshare with Melvin Gordon in the backfield, and he’s had some impressive reps that have gone viral of him carrying multiple defenders. That contact balance is the reason he was drafted in the second round and the top 40.
It’s great to see that contact balance show up week in and week out, but Williams showed a bit more tonight. He’s able to consistently one cut and get downfield, but has enough burst in the short area to bounce runs outside when necessary, and that’s even more possible because of his processing speed.
Tonight though, Williams found the end zone as a receiver, something that he had opportunities to do at North Carolina. While he’s gotten 15 targets this year, seeing him get a target in the red zone was good too see, and of course Williams delivered because of his ability to create extra yardage through contact.
When given the opportunity, Javonte Williams can thrive in this Denver Broncos offense. He’s able to have success even when boxes are stacked and he gets contacted early in his runs, and he can make an impact as a receiver and in space. It’s going to be important for the Broncos to see that continued development from Williams to be a workhorse, especially if another young quarterback finds his way to Denver. Not everything is positive about this season, but Williams sure is one of those positives.
