NFL Top 100 List is controversial for wide receivers
The NFL released the first part of its annual NFL Top 100 list late Sunday evening. In total, the players from 41 – 100 were announced and as usual, there was a lot of discourse, specifically about the wide receiver position.
The receivers listed on the Top 100 list were as follows:
96: Cole Beasley
94: Jarvis Landry
91: Corey Davis
87: Allen Robinson
81: Chris Godwin
80: Adam Thielen
76: Tyler Lockett
72: Michael Thomas
65: Calvin Ridley
62: AJ Brown
55: Keenan Allen
53: Justin Jefferson
48: Mike Evans
The most obvious case of disagreement came with Michael Thomas being listed at all. The Saints’ stud, albeit one of the most talented in the game, had an injury-riddled 2020 in which he totaled just 438 receiving yards.
One notable name that seems to be completely left off of the NFL Top 100 is Washington’s Terry Mclaurin. There is no denying McLaurin’s talent, but unfortunately for him, his stats haven’t been on par with some of the other receivers of his caliber because of the poor quarterback play he has dealt with.
Some suggested that Allen Robinson was way too low on the list. Robinson has been a consistent possession receiver for his whole career, but like Mclaurin, he faced poor quarterback play in both Jacksonville and Chicago. However, Robinson has managed to get the best out of his quarterbacks, putting up consistent numbers yearly.
Finally, ever since Justin Jefferson and Justin Herbert had historic seasons for their respective franchises, the Los Angeles Chargers, and Minnesota Vikings’ discourse has been at an all-time high, including comparisons between Keenan Allen and Justin Jefferson.
From the infamous ‘madden ratings’ tweet posted by the Chargers main Twitter account to the ‘Rookie of the Year’ vs ‘All Pro’ debates, this was just another part of the debate.
With picks 40 – 1 yet to be released and more receivers like Davante Adams and Stefon Diggs yet to be listed, it’s fair to assume that there will be lots more controversy.
