Dallas Cowboys: Nahshon Wright turns heads in Hall of Fame Game
Dallas Cowboys corner Nahshon Wright had a good performance in the Hall of Fame Game.
The Dallas Cowboys struggled on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game, falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-3. It was a tough outing in all phases, from special teams gaffes to sputtering on offense, but all wasn’t lost, as rookie corner Nahshon Wright put in a solid performance.
The selection of Wright in the third round by Dallas was greeted with plenty of shock and skepticism. It was clear that the Cowboys needed serious help at the position (having drafted Kelvin Joseph one round prior), but picking Wright seemed extremely early from the reaction of many analysts.
Wright had five picks in his time at Oregon State, and with his height and length, looked like a prototypical press man corner. The former wide receiver made some good strides in college, but many still believed he’d be a project in the NFL.
Wright has stood out in camp to this point, making plays consistently throughout camp. He’s been extremely physical and a menace at the catch point, breaking up passes every day in coverage.
His game got put to the test tonight against the very best in Pittsburgh. He got reps against second-year breakout hopeful Chase Claypool, and was able to hold his own pretty well. Wright did get beat deep on a big play, but he was in solid position until a late push by Claypool to create some space.
Wright was physical at the line and at the top of stems all night long, showing off why he can eventually be counted on in press looks. His length showed up as well, giving him an advantage in reps. He also showed the physicality in the run game, coming up to make a couple tackles.
This was a good confidence boost for Nahshon Wright, showing that he can compete with playmakers at the NFL level. Hopefully it continues to carry throughout practices and the rest of preseason. Who knows? Wright could end up starting opposite Trevon Diggs for the Dallas Cowboys to start the season if he keeps things going.
