Houston Texans 2022 Mock Draft

Round 1: Spencer Rattler, QB, Oklahoma

The quarterback position is extremely important for the Houston Texans in starting a rebuild. Obviously, this selection follows the plan of trading Watson elsewhere. If that’s the case, either Tyrod Taylor acts as the filler in 2021, or Houston gives third round pick Davis Mills a chance to prove he can be a starting quarterback. Mills looked good in spurts at Stanford, but it seems unlikely he shows much potential, especially on a struggling football team.

If the Texans get the top pick in the draft, quarterback has to be at the top of the list. Right now, Spencer Rattler looks like the consensus QB1 from summer evaluations, and it’s easy to see why. He has all the tools to be the top pick in the draft next April.

It starts with the arm talent. Rattler can make any throw on the field, and possesses plenty of touch to the intermediate and deep parts of the field. He can make throws with different arm angles as well and keeps good velocity on the football.

Rattler also does a good job maintaining accuracy while under pressure. He stays poised and can make throws (ill-advised or not) off his back foot.

Rattler trusts his arm a little too much at times and has some bad turnovers on tape when trying to make the spectacular play. If he cleans up those decisions and his footwork, he can reach his potential, even in Houston.
