2022 NFL Draft top pick contenders: Detroit Lions

The upcoming season is sure to be an interesting one for the Detroit Lions. New Head Coach Dan Campbell has a mentality that fits the city perfectly, but the roster still needs some obvious work. Detroit made the right pick in the 2021 NFL Draft with Penei Sewell in the first round to set up a strong offensive line, but that left holes at other positions.

The biggest barrier for the Lions will be the lack of pass-catchers. Breshad Perriman and Tyrell Williams won’t be able to get the job done by themselves and while Amon-Ra St. Brown has upside, he’s still going to need time. That essentially leaves T.J. Hockenson and the running backs as the main targets for new quarterback Jared Goff.

While Goff was a steady quarterback in Los Angeles, he was also in an explosive offense with weapons and a play-calling genius. Now, his true skills and knowledge will be put to the test in a situation that is nearly the exact opposite.

We haven’t even touched on the defense, a unit that, while improved, will be a point of emphasis in this rebuild. Combine all those roster issues and concerns and it becomes clear why Detroit could be among the top few picks, if not the top pick, in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Luckily, they have a decent foundation with the offensive line. Moving forward they can look to begin building an offense with weapons and perhaps a new, young quarterback if they end up high enough in the draft order.
