New England Patriots trade options with San Francisco 49ers
2. A bold quarterback swap?
You’re going to need to stick with me for this idea.
Remember, this is hypothetical and we’re just talking here.
In the spirit of hypotheticals and filed under the category of “things to think about”, what about the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers trading quarterbacks?
No, not Trey Lance and Mac Jones.
What about the 49ers sending Jimmy Garoppolo to the Patriots for Cam Newton? Garoppolo obviously played under Josh McDaniels and Bill Belichick for the first portion of his NFL career prior to being traded to the 49ers in the 2017 season.
He has since helped take the 49ers to the NFC Championship game but he’s also about to be replaced by Trey Lance. Mac Jones is also going to be replacing Cam Newton with New England, perhaps sooner rather than later, and the two quarterback rooms right now have vastly differing styles from each of their top two quarterbacks.
Swapping Garoppolo and Newton would provide each team with the chance to, stylistically at least, run the same offense for both quarterbacks.
Because of how much these two guys count against each team’s salary cap, respectively, this kind of a move is a serious longshot to happen. But, I think the idea has some merit in the interest of both teams doing their best to get the young quarterbacks on the field as soon as possible and having no significant change in the offensive scheme if the veteran plays.
