Flowers’ Size Could Hinder Him In Evals

Perhaps the biggest question mark surrounding Zay Flowers as we look to the 2022 NFL Draft is his size. He’s listed at 5’10” and 177 pounds on the Boston College site. We’ve seen players go early in the draft at that size (Jaylen Waddle at 5’10”, 183, Marquise Brown at 5’9″ 181, Henry Ruggs III at 5’11” and 187), so it’s not out of the realm of possibility, especially with Flowers’ skill set against press coverage.

But, one thing to watch regarding his size and frame is how Flowers handles contact throughout his stem. Bigger, stronger corners have forced him out of rhythm and off his spot. Flowers needs to work on using his hands more effectively to shed contact and use the bend and flexibility he has to dip and reduce his surface area when working into his stem. Flowers has flashed the ability to avoid the jam at the line of scrimmage, so more of that will be big in 2021 as well.

If there’s anything else to watch, it’s that Flowers does have some body catches on tape, so seeing him catch the football more consistently out in front would help. He also needs to work on late adjustments to the football, as that has led to drops for him.
