Pittsburgh Steelers: 3 burning questions ahead of training camp
2. Who Steps Up At Corner?
Losing Nelson and Hilton also really hurt the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, and the secondary will likely be one of the weaker units in Pittsburgh this season. The boost from the pass rush should help hide some issues at times this season, but it’s going to be a tall order versus playoff teams and down the stretch.
There’s a chance that the Steelers add someone to the room, but right now, it’s going to be up to Joe Haden to continue to play solid football as he gets deeper into his 30s. Scheme has certainly helped him with his longevity, but he will need to carry the load this season. It will be interesting to see if Cam Sutton, who has been improving in the slot, make the transition outside. He did make three starts there in 2020, but a full season will be a different challenge.
This opens things up for someone to step up in nickel and dime packages. James Pierre has gained favor from the coaches so far this offseason, so it’s possible the job is his to lose. Otherwise, one of the former Michigan State Spartans, Justin Layne and Shakur Brown, could fight for some reps. Brown is a converted receiver with great ball skills, and Layne has the physical profile.
However it works out, the Pittsburgh Steelers still need help here, and it’s a position that fans and analysts will be watching as training camp gets underway.
